9/7 MFL: Week One, It Has Begun!

Mixed Fall League Week 1, it has begun
And yes, we came early to start the fun!
It's a Fruit Salad of 14 teams, all eager to win
Big prize money in the pot: so let the games begin!

The bowlers walked into Limerick Bowl to find
The team names and numbers already setup and assigned
No more drawing of lots, we just went with the flow
After discussing the league rules we were ready to go!

Practice started quickly, not good if you're slow
Or chatting left and right, I only got one throw!
Play was truly fast-paced with three people in each team
Games were through too quickly, or so it seemed

It is fabulous how many stellar games were played
By two Joels, Paolo, Olee, Rico and my teammate James
With the ladies, Mitchie, Alice, Lanie and Angie shined
But Rosie, Eden, and Brenda were not far behind!

Special mention for the anchor of Lansones Team
Joel D, OMG! He was so galing-galing!
His scores were 234, 214 and 241, oh my!
He's our player of the week, no one can deny!

Some were like me, and could not find their groove
No worries, we have ten more league nights to improve
From beginner to All Star, in this league we all belong
Eye on the prize, we'll do our best to finish strong!

Hokay!  For those of you new to the MFL, welcome to the BowlStar Blog, which will be our way of providing our MFL participants with (hopefully) entertaining accounts of each week's highlights and fantabulous performances, and where we can share information in general, such as reminders and things to know.  I try to find ways to help us all get to know our fellow bowlers and their teams in the league, anything to help us remember our 14 teams and our 42 participants (hint: chismis helps).  You will see poetry and song lyrics in both English and Tagalog, depending on what inspiration hits me.  And I plan to bring back the quizzes and brain teasers in the Pahabol (Follow-Up?) blogs.

On to the highlights:  So proud was I of our bowlers in the 2014 Philly Pinoy Mixed Fall League, for as we made our way into Limerick Bowl at 10 minutes to our 5 pm Kickoff Night start, majority of them were already present.  No doubt they were excited about the start of the league, they were ready to rock and roll!

We ended up foregoing the drawing of lots for the team names and numbers. Having found the lane assignments all setup by Limerick Bowl, with team names and numbers lined up with the final team rosters, we figured it was simpler to run with it.  The team names, team numbers and team members are listed here, with team captains indicated with asterisk:

On our schedule are the Theme Nights where we all dress up in the same theme (looks great on pix!). Next week, September 13, our theme is Americana, in remembrance of 9/11.  Here are your options for American theme attire, based on degree of difficulty:
  • Easy: Wear red, white and/or blue shirts.  US flag colors, bow.  You're good to go.
  • Medium:  Wear shirts or accessories with picture or logo of American flag, American places (e.g. NYC, Philadelphia, Gettysberg, LA, Hawaii, Alaska, Pennsylvania, etc.), American landmarks (e.g. Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty, Grand Canyon, Golden Gate Bridge, Disney World, etc.), or American icons (e.g. TV shows, jazz legends, Apple, Harley, etc.).  Basically anything that says America and is linked to America to you.
  • Hard: Dress up like an American icon, such as Ben Franklin, Bill Clinton, Uncle Sam, Oprah, Lady Gaga or Elvis.  Wow... practice for Halloween (Bowloween!)....

We all played with our brand new teams on Kickoff Night, and since we were setting our averages, we will have to wait for the official league standings to be posted to know the actual outcomes of each match.  The league standings will be posted on the Limerick Bowl website by Friday, according to Chris the league coordinator.  Patience, dear bowlers....

Your BowlStar blogger is teamed up with the father and son duo, James Que and young Gabriel Que, in Team #10 Papaya (Go Papa! Ya!).  We were dressed in yellow shirts (almost papaya color!).  We were up against Team #9 Mangga (Mangga Masanga, ooh la la!), with my old Balut teammate Lowen Gono, my IncrediBowl anchor Mitchie Masanga and returning Philly Pinoy bowler Jon Cainglet, who is a first timer to the MFL.  It was good to have Jon in the pit, coz he knew how to operate the Limerick computer screens.  James and Jon were red hot bowlers, amazing!  Gabriel was bowling really well, I was trying to keep up with him!  And Lowen, OMG!  Lowen has improved by leaps and bounds, making marks and strikes all night long.  Mitchie struggled like I did but found her groove and exploded in the third game, what a trooper!  I apologize for my dismal performance to my stellar teammates and opponents: I was distracted, I was not present, I could not be found half the time; it was not "strategy" or "stragedy", but felt very tragic to me.  I wanted to start low, I said.  I wanted to be consistent, I said.  Be careful what you ask for, coz I got low and I got consistent, but consistently awful (karumaldumal), but...I will live to bowl again!

As mentioned in the opening poem, cheers to Joel Deo, my golly golay, for a performance for the ages.  He had a 689 series, super wow, I am running out of superlatives!

Current high averages for the male players:
  1. Joel Deo, Lansones = 229!
  2. Joel Capucao, Atis = 208! Go Papa!
  3. Paolo Quimbo, Bayabas = 199 (also bowled highest scratch game of 247)
  4. James Que, Papaya = 195 Go Papa-Ya!
  5. Olee Ramiscal, Rambutan = 188

Current high averages for the female players:
  1. Mitchie Masanga, Mangga = 151 Go Mitchie!
  2. Alice Deo, Santol = 149
  3. (tie) Lanie Santos, Lansones = 148 (445 pins); and Angie Sotomango, Langka = 148 (444 pins)

Our 200-Clubbers are Joel Deo of Lansones, Joel Capucao of Atis (206, 222), Olee Ramiscal of Rambutan (205, 212), James Que of my Papaya team (208), and Rico Lontoc of Langka (201).

As luck would have it, our Lucky Ticket (50/50) raffle queen Alice Mercado sold a whopping $92 worth of tickets.  And the winning ticket, for the $46 prize, was in the hands of Jon Cainglet of Team Mangga, who had split payment of the ticket with (who else!) Joel Deo of Team Lansones.  When stars align....you get both your ball and some money in the pocket!

Watch out for the Pahabol Blog and email communications on the league standings.  And remember the American theme attire for next week.

Till then, bowl, baby, bowl!
