9/14 MFL Week 2: Surprise Stars On the Rise

What a night, what a night!  The forecast for this beautiful Sunday was "sunny with a chance of bowling": a perfect day for this bowling addict to find herself at the bowling lanes twice!

I will prebowl, said Jing
Pero ako'y dumating
Kept my prebowl scores today
Though I was (very) tempted to play

It was our second week in regulation play, and all our MFL bowlers prebowled or played tonight.  Perfect attendance!  There will be no more vacant scores since Paul Ficarra in Team Durian and Victor Ficarra in Team Duhat (nang kita'y masilayan) played and set their averages (belated welcome to the league, Paul and Victor!).  We were on time for practice, and had our Americana shirts on: such an interesting array of USA colors and emblems and logos, kakatuwa! This begs for a pop quiz! Who wore the following for our Americana theme night (answers at bottom):
A.  Charlie Brown
B.  Disney / Mickey Mouse
C.  KISS
D.  Uncle Sam
E.  White tunic, blue jeans and red shoes (Tori Burch pa kamo!)

Thank you, dear MFLers, for coming all decked out: we all looked good in red, white and blue!  Next week, Week 3, September 21, is Filipino shirt night, but you are welcome to come in your bahag or patadyong, para mahimatay sa takot o kabagin sa katatawa ang kalaban niyo sa kanilang makikita, hay! Winner!

My Team Papaya was up against Team Langka's Rolly Hernandez, Angie Sotomango and Rico Lontoc (team captain).  Rolly used to play in our winter league years ago, glad he can join us again.  Magalang yan, nangungupo sa akin nung una (I feel so...respectable), pero sabi ko kakalbuhin ko siya dahil tumatanda ako sa "po", so Ate na ako ngayon, yebah!  Rico is new to the Philly Pinoy leagues, but is not a new bowler.  Roy's description is apt, he bowls like Paeng Nepomuceno, but is a lefty: what a threat, super-galingkakatakot!  He came with his own support crew and cheering squad of future MFL leaguers, yeah!  Shout out: sali kayo next year ha!  And rounding out the bigatins of Team Langka is none other than my bowling angel, bowling guru and beloved USBC league teammate Angie Sotomango, of the Sotomango bowling dynasty (hubby Edmer is at the helm of Team Pakwan and sons Angelo and Andrew bowl in the winter league).  Angie and I bowled with our Madam Prez Mitchie Masanga in an all women USBC summer league (proud of our team name, Philly Pins!) and our team took first place, with a resounding 6 win lead over the next opponent: good chemistry, we balance each other out really well.  We added Giovie Young of Team Durian to our team for our fall league's 4-person team roster: more fun in the Philly Pins...!

Team Papaya took the first and second games by very tight margins (game 2 by 2 pins!), Team Langka kept it really close. I was getting dagger looks from Rico due to my prebowl scores: sorry, i actually showed up this week (salamat naman...).  It was the 13th birthday of our junior teammate Gabriel Que, and we were thankful that the bowling gods gave him the gift of a stellar night.  Great play! Whoo hoo, happy birthday!

James:
OMG
What a sight to see
Strings of strikes
Rico says yikes!
Go Papa-Ya!

I need to post this fabulous picture of the emergent Que bowling dynasty, James, Grace and Gabriel (photo courtesy of May Liboon). The light green shirted elbow on the left side of the photo belongs to younger brother Gavin....

By the third game, James was having trouble with the lane and I knew my prebowl score was lower, and boy, was it close.  By golly, Gabriel was making spares and strikes: good job, we need those!  Angie was getting frustrated by splits and wayward balls, and Rico's mojo seemed to have been stolen by Rolly, coz Rolly turned into Paeng Nepomuceno, ang galing kasi ng coaching ni Angie!  Anak ng tipaklong, hihikain ako sa nerbiyos!  Last frame, Rico left to play and we are 15 pins ahead.  He leaves a single pin and makes his spare, and only needs 5 pins to tie, 6 pins to win.  Huwag daw ikanal so he throws it straight and leaves a multipin split with 4 pins left standing.  They win the game by one pin, malapit pa naming nasilat!  Whoo hoo, go Papaya, three games and total pins were ours tonight!

Our highlights for Week 2 were poetry-worthy.  You truly inspire me each week, dear MFLers, with your commitment and dedication to the game!

On this second night of MFL regulation play
An explosion of bowling brilliance was on display
Players unexpecting that they'd shine tonight
Gave our league veterans an exciting fight

Brightest of these stars was Team Chico's Grace
She was phenomenal, astronomical, from outer space
Playing 40 pins above her average, with help from Dennis and Blue
There was nothing Team Atis' Joel, Lino and Lolet could do

New power couple Jojo and Mila gave us quite a show
Their cheering squad went wild as they threw good throw after throw!
Are our new bowlers improving? Do you really want to know?
Just check out their scores now, see how high they go!

Blue, Ivan and Dennis all had awesome games
Chelo and I played like BowlStar dames
We had a total of eight 200-clubbers: wow!
They're getting hot, nobody can stop them now!

With all the highs unfortunately come the lows
In bowling as in life that is how it goes
With 9 more weeks, in the bottom though you sit
You can still end up on top, so don't you quit!

So here are the recaps based on the MFL Week 2 League standing sheet from the Limerick Bowl website.

  • Grace Que is PLAYER OF THE WEEK.  Came in with 126 average, and had games of 139, 168 and 169 for a 158 average for the night (32 pins above previous!).  So proud of you and so happy for you!  Talagang out of this world!

Here is a photo of Team Chico, courtesy of May Liboon.  Unfortunately, due to our short season, Team Papaya will not get to play Team Chico in regulation play.  Baka sa finals, naks!

Special mention for team performance is Team Guyabano with Romy Liboon, Marlon Paed and Chona/String Aquino, all playing not far from their averages but able to pull off a sweep of the struggling Team Santol with Jay Lizardo, Ed Nicolas and Alice Deo.  Under the radar but over the top: congratulations to our current #1 team!  Photo of Team Guyabano was taken by May Liboon.

Other players that TURNED PRO tonight by playing above their previous averages all night long:
  • Mila Sangalang of Team Bayabas had 79 average going in, and had games of 90, 91 and 141.
  • Jojo Sangalang of Team Lansones had 131 previous average and scored 131, 149 and 186.
  • Ivan Masanga of Team Pakwan had 152 previous average and bowled 127, 179 and a whopping 220.  Yebah!
  • Chelo Compendio of Team Pakwan bowled 125, 154 and 134 with previous average of 122. Go Chelo Babe!
  • Ako rin daw (Papaya Jing): after last week's 137 average, my scores this week were 173, 168 and 152.  BowlStar!  Mukhang hindi kasama sa top score recap ng league standing sheets ang mga nagprebowl...pansin ko lang.

Our Shining Stars with breakthrough single games 20 pins or more above their previous average are Lolet (161!), Lowen (167!), Mitchie (173!), Rolly (146!), Angie (176!), Rico (190 and 192!), Romy (190!), Giovie (146!), and Jon (176!).  Flashes of bowling brilliance, galing!

What can I say but surprise, surprise!  We have a Player of the Week (Grace), Team of the Week (Chico), Couple of the Week (Jojo and Mila Sanggalang), and so many great performances that the blog became super LONG, to ensure that all your great accomplishments are recorded, recognized and celebrated.  Galing-galing, ituloy natin!

Our Lucky Ticket raffle winner was Mitchie Masanga, who won $46 from the pot.  Many many thanks to the selfless dedication of our raffle queen Alice Mercado for selling the tickets every week.  Here is a photo of Alice with hubby Desi of Team Bayabas (thank you, May!).

Shout out once more to Rico Lontoc's entourage and cheering squad (sali kayo next year ha!), imported from New Jersey pa yung iba: thanks for helping Alice sell tickets, which apparently resulted in Mitchie buying the winning ticket (but sorry, no balato for you).  I absolutely loved the impromptu demonstration of dramatic bowling approaches, should have recorded that.  Pero I'm not worried, I am sure we will see those poses again!

NEXT WEEK is Pinoy Theme night (bahag...yeah).  Team Papaya meets Team Pakwan: masaya ito, mga barkadang laman ng bolingan

Remember to come before 5:15 pm.  Remember to bring your balls, boys and girls (hagikgik!).

Sunny it's been, sunny it'll be, getting chilly, but with an excellent chance of bowling...yebah!  Bowl, baby, bowl!

QUIZ Answers:  Ed Nicolas (Team Santol) wore Charlie Brown.  Chelo Compendio (Team Pakwan) wore Disney/Mickey Mouse.  Brenda Cooper of Team Duhat wore KISS, while her hubby Jeff Cooper also of Duhat wore a scary Uncle Sam shirt.  None other than out dalagang Filipina bowler from Team Lansones, Lanie Santos wore the very stylish red, white and blue outfit.  Bongga ka 'day!
