Some REMINDERS
and ANNOUNCEMENTS for starters:
·
Our
theme this coming Sunday, Week 10, November 15 is PHILLY TEAMS. Philly Team theme sounds like pili-tim-tim with
Pinoy Pidro accent! Wear your Eagles, Phillies, Downingtown East, Drexel, Villanova,
Penn State, Saint Philip and James, or other local team apparel with pride!
·
Please note that all
bowling fees for our 13 week season must be paid in full by Week 11, November
22, which is NEXT WEEK. You can already pay for the rest of the
season this coming Sunday, spread out the remaining costs between this and next
Sunday or however else you want to spin it, as long as we are all paid by Week
11. Team Captains, I am counting on
you to get all the monies collected by next week.
·
PhillyPinoy
is holding a Coat Drive for local homeless and safe shelters during MFL Week 10
and Week 11. Please kindly bring your
gently used coats, scarves, hats, boots and gloves of all shapes and sizes to
the MFL for collection. The warmth of
your hearts shall warm those in need.
Thank you
very much!
Kulambo is the Tagalog word for mosquito net. In the land of dengue, it is the only thing
over our beds at night protecting us from getting bitten to death and eaten
alive by bugs. So when husbands and
wives battle, the question is, who is outside of the kulambo?
We had
some hot kulambo battles this weekend, Week 9 of the 2015 Philly Pinoy Mixed
Fall League (MFL). It was Giyera de Patani within the Bahay Kubo
League (except none of them occurred with Team Patani…). The Sitaw vs. Bawang match pitched Roy and
Chelo Compendio against each other. And JC
Squared were battling in the Singkamas vs Kalabasa match. What can I say? It was Gabi
ng mga Misis (Night of the Wives).
The Hotdog song Beh Buti Nga
is playing in my head: ngayon ay BowlStar
na ako, siguro tumutulo ang laway mo!
TL, baby, as in Tulo Laway, but
also True Love! Girl Power, yeah, order ni misis!
Unbowlievably,
there are only four (yes, 4!) weeks remaining in our season. Really now, only four
more weeks. Only three more weeks actually,
then we have our finals night, awards night, where we crown our winners with
cold hard cash and disappear into the night.
Our last few weeks shall be mighty exciting,
with many position changes expected with each Veggie Battle. Sugod,
mga gulay! Ibandera and Bahay Kubo!
Lanes
21-22: It was Sitaw vs. Bawang in the
first of the Kulambo Battles. Jon of
Sitaw turned pro (14 pins above average!), while teammates Alice and Roy had
solid performances. It should have been
enough to win the night, but Bawang came rampaging with a mighty onslaught of
bowling prowess! OMG, Jojo played a
whopping 24 pins above average: prowpayshownahl, baby! Incredibowlicious Bowlstar Chelo Babe of
Bawang came out with all guns firing (165!), showing that in this Kulambo Battle,
the Babe reigns supreme. Seeing stars
with JQ it truly was, a 232 game for James, solid, stellar, unbowlievable. Bawang sweeps Sitaw, 4-0. Bawang jumps from #10 to #7, while Sitaw
drops from #1 to #4.
Lanes
23-24: Team Luya’s Atit, Gigi and Nonoy were up against the Quimbo family,
Raul, Joy (subbing for Giovie = get well soon!) and Paolo of Team Kamatis. With Raul and Joy, we had a couple actually playing
with each other and not against each other: no one is out of the kulambo, uy, walang lalamukin! With Joy’s
average not set, the outcome was unclear and the kalkal-ations (chicken scratch
calculations) were quite confusing and had to be repeated again (and again…). Boy oh boy, the headliners for both teams
turned pro: both Raul and Atit played 13 pins above average, great job! Raul’s 200 score in the 2nd game
clinched a point for Kamatis. Our theory
is still accurate: Raul plays stellar games at the MFL the day after FSU (Florida
State University) suffers a loss on the football field, probably coz he slept
like a baby the night before (waking up every few hours crying, that is…). The kalkal-ations that were validated by the
Limerick Bowl results showed Luya winning 3-1 over Kamatis. Luya leaps from #2 to #1. Kamatis moves from #9 to #10.
Lanes
25-26: Oscar, Mila and my GoPapa JoelC of Singkamas were up against Desi, Gabe
and your JC blogger of Kalabasa in the second Kulambo Battle of the night. Kuya Oscar started hot with a 135 game, and played
close to his average all night long, yeah!
Mila had a solid performance as well, great play! My dear Papa JoelC struggled all night,
giving Kalabasa a chance to seize (one more chance – Victor Wood?), an
opportunity to capitalize, and we seized the capital and chanced the
opportunity! Desi was a true Desi-mator, turning pro and making those pins fly,
yebah! Gabe was rock solid, had a 138 in
the second game, and never gave up! The
BowlStar blogger lived up to her name, hallelujah. My kryptonite was strong that night: when I was
not close to the pit, my GoPapa would throw strikes, di ba? He shall be back next
week (beware!) without me in the pit… Kalabasa
squashes Singkamas, 4-0. Kalabasa rises
from #6 to #3. Singkamas sinks from #7 to
#11.
Lanes
27-28: Team Upo was battling the ghost team Linga. Edmer was still out with an
injury, so Jops Datu came to sub, playing with Jun and Mitchie. The saying “habang may Linga, may pag-asa" (while there is Linga, there is hope)
somehow did not hold true for Team Upo on this fateful night. The chance to win four “easy” points passed
them by as they struggled and fought to survive. There were flashes of brilliance: a 162 game
from Jun and a 179 score for Mitchie, but, oh the humanity! Someone who just happened to look like Jops
was playing…. Bring back, bring back, bring back his mojo to him, to him! Minsan
kahit na pilitin mong uminit…ay di
susunod (Apo). O Upo, minulto ng Linga. Upo wins one point, and drops from #4 to #6.
Lanes
29-30: Team Patola, with perennial player of the week Dennis, MVP Lanie and
Edwin’s (stellar) prebowl, was up against Team Talong, with car pool buddy
Marlon, Rico Suave-Mambo and darling Eden’s prebowl.
I had memories of the 2015 MFL Draft Day, when a debate started on which
vegetable was bigger (Dennis started it...). Does size matter? Alin
ang mas malaki, mas mahaba, mas mataba, makinis o bakubako… They fought long and hard…ngik ngik
ngik. Marlon and Eden of Talong had some
good games, and Rico Labandero washed those pins clean off the lanes. But the Patola team was relentless in their pursuit of victory, all three players put on a great show! Mas
malaki daw…ang lamang! Patola won BIG, 4-0,
against the Talong team. Panalo Patola, talo ang Talong (say that
fast…). Patola moves from #5 to #2,
while Talong moves from #3 to #5.
Lanes
31-32: Blue of Mustasa was all alone
once again, with Grace’s prebowl and Paul’s blind. Mustasa was up against Patani’s Rolly, Chona
(prebowl) and Romy. Both team muses had
prebowled (with excellent scores!), there were only three guys on the lanes, and while the guys all seemed
to struggle they still put up decent numbers in this tightly even matchup.
On the way home, Marlon told us about Blue taking a little spill on the
lanes, his pants getting soaked with oil, but nothing was hurt except his pride…! Patani
started strong, taking games 1-2, and it looked like they were going to sweep,
until Grace of Mustasa single-handedly decided the outcome of
game 3 and total pins, with a truly fantabowlous 199 game! Wow!
Q&A:
Q: No couples here but since Romy and Blue used
to be housemates, AND Romy’s team is called Patani, can this qualify as a
Giyera de Patani?
A: Hmm…no.
Q: Did the
bowling buddies and fellow Bowlinators Romy and Blue negotiate the outcome up
front?
A: Hmm…don’t think so, not a chance,
knowing these two.
Not a win, not a
loss, it is a split 2-2 between Mustasa and Patani. Mustasa remains anchored at #12, Patani
remains planted at #13.
Lanes
33-34: In the lanes that have become
synonymous with Mars (it’s another planet!) were Sibuyas and Labanos, both
hungry for points to move up in the rankings.
JoelD of Sibuyas was all alone with some bleak prebowl scores from both Lolet
and Lino: his work was cut out for him and boy did he rise to the
occasion. What a competitor, truly “eye
of the tiger” (the song was actually playing as I mentioned this to Lanie): 214
average and 642 series for JoelD, amazing!
But was it enough to win the day?
Ed, Rosie and July from Labanos were not fazed as they went to
work. Ed, our new carpool buddy, started
slow but finished strong: great performance!
Rosie, not quite sure if she could play three games coming back, ended up playing
pretty darn good, if I may say! July
turned pro, playing almost 20 pins above his average, with a 205 in game 1. JoelD’s fireworks won game 2 and one point
for Sibuyas, but the combined firepower and strong team work of the Labanos players
won game 1, game 3 and total pins. Eye
of the radish melts eye of the tiger….pinagtulungan! Team chemistry wins the day as Labanos wins 3-1
against Sibuyas. Labanos rises from #11
to #8. Sibuyas goes from #8 to #9.
Wow, such
exciting matches, such reversals of fortune, such drama on the lanes, can you
believe it? There shall be more of this
in the coming weeks, I can feel it!

winning team and another who fought a courageous battle but lost the war.
·
With
a whopping 523 series and a Week 9 average that was 32 pins above previous, Dennis of Patola is a Player of the
Week! His stellar play allowed Team
Patola to sweep Team Labanos. His scores
were 189, 164 and 179 for a 523 series (177 average) against a 145 previous
average. Congratulations!
·
Eye
of the Tiger, perennial lucky winner of our weekly raffles, he had a bowltastic
run on the lanes. JoelD of Sibuyas had a 642 series (214 average), and scores of 193,
226 and 223 with a 181 previous average.
His play allowed Sibuyas to steal one point against Labanos. Wow, bow!
SHINING
STARS. Congratulations for logging games that were
at least 10 pins above your average!
