10/27 Team TAPSILOG vs. Team BALUT: Bowlcoholic Battle!

It is already Week 8 for the Philly Pinoy Mixed Fall League (MFL), the eighth of nine weeks of regulation play = the season is almost over!  This Sunday's marquee match-up between Team TAPSILOG and Team BALUT is a Battle of Bowlcoholics: we are the ones who time and time again meet up at the Palace for practice, chikahan and asaran.  Most of us are members of the Bowling Committee (Desi, Angie, Edmer and I).  In short, we are certified Bowlcoholics (not anonymous!  By the way, the word Bowlcoholics was coined by Raul Quimbo, and it is the name of their team in the Philly Pinoy Annual Winter League).  We are playing with friends, so even as we practiced on the lanes this past Wednesday night, we knew that tonight was going to be super FUN, regardless of who won.

Team TAPSILOG is composed of Angie Sotomango of the Sotomango bowling dynasty (and wife to my Bandidong BALUT teammate Edmer Sotomango), Ivan Masanga of Ka Ayban fame (and husband of Philly Pinoy Madam Prez Mitchie Masanga of Team LAPU-LAPU), and dancing Desi Mercado, hubby of our 50/50 raffle queen, Alice Mercado.  According to them, they are the Geriatric Team, coz they have the most "mature" make-up of players in the league.

Our talk on the lane was the memory of a "tutorial" that Angie had been giving Ivan on a previous Wednesday night practice session.  The topic was "mahaba at matigas" (long and hard) = hmmm....  Although the green mind immediately started sniggering (humagikgik!), the lesson really was "Habaan mo ang iyong release, at tigasan mo ang iyong braso habang binabato mo ang bola!" (Lengthen your release and keep your arm straight as you throw the ball!).  O say mo?  While you are at it, finger the ball.  In short, mahaba, matigas at may pitik pa!  Yebah, ang bastus (ng utak ko)!  Sorry, could not resist, this is irresistably good blog material!

The whole pit started out HOT, we were looking good with spares and strikes!  The battle was neck and neck.  It was the Sotomango Exhibition Show for a couple of frames, with Angie getting a 4,7,10-split, and Edmer getting a 1,2,4,10-split. But it was my BALUT teammate Lowen who was outbowling us all: my secret weapon, who is no longer a secret coz I keep broadcasting about him on this blog!  Hanep sa galing, he bowled a 162 game (40 pins above average), tinapatan ako (we had the same score)!  Naging cardio (as in cardiovascular exercise) na naman ang bowling sa kalulundag ko, galing-galing ni Pareng Lowen!  Edmer and Ivan were just warming up.  While Desi and Angie were above average, Lowen's outstanding performance was enough for Team BALUT to win the first game by 20 pins.  Looking good, my dear Team BALUT/SISIW, yebah!  But the scores were oh so close, we need to keep our focus!

Boy, was it hard to keep focus during the second game.  The energy dropped and the lanes were getting hard to read.  With my secret weapon Lowen lying low, his katapat Ivan bowling 20 pins above average, and the rest of us bowling close to our averages, Team TAPSILOG took the second game by about 20 pins.  One all, and it is anybody's to take!

Come the third game, Ivan was the one truly keeping it matigas, mahaba at may pitik pa = strike ng strike ng strike, yeah!  Angie was throwing her share of strikes, and Desi was dancing on the lanes, with his share of strikes: sayaw, Desi!  We were ALL dancing on the lanes between the 9th and 10th frames: Desi and I were dancing Body Language style (Frieda Fonda!), not sure I can describe Lowen's and Angie's styles..., Edmer was doing a moonwalk, hanep!  Party on lanes 17-18!  But oh the marks were not coming BALUT's way, such that I had 80 pins to make up by the time my 10th frame came up.  Ivan had pulled off an amazing and fantabulous 181 game = 40 pins above average, Ka Ayban!  So the night ended with three points going  to Team TAPSILOG, one point for Team BALUT.  Great game, my fellow Bowlcoholics!  Another epic and exciting battle in the annals of the MFL, which unfortunately did not bring victory to the beleaguered BALUT Bandits....

With Team SISIG sweeping Team GOTO in the next pit, I was fairly sure Team BALUT was in the bottom again.  But lo and behold, upon calculating handicap pin totals for the tied teams, we actually maintain our 9th place standing.  Here are the unofficial results (official results will be posted at the Palace website):

Oh my poor Go Papa and me, our respective teams are at the bottom of our beloved league.  BUT it's not over yet!  Just one more week left in regulation play and it again promises to be VERY exciting with many potential spoilers and upsets.

Here are the outstanding and noteworthy performances of the night:

  • Our 200 clubbers for tonight are Romy-SISIG (210, 233), Roy-KROPEK (204), Blue-ADOBO (220, 203), Art-MONAY (212), and our very first (and currently the only) female 200 clubber, Alice-KROPEK (213!!! yebah!).

  • Bowlers who turned pro, bowling all games at and above average tonight (with their average for the night, and average going in) are Lolet-SISIG (132 average from 103), Angie-TAPSILOG (161 average from 145), Lanie-DAING (160 average from 126, wow!) and Jing-BALUT (164 from 153).  Lanie-DAING's performance (156, 166, 160 with 126 average) is especially noteworthy because all her games were at least 30 pins above her average.  You are a superstar pro-player, Lanie!  Super galing-galing!

  • Our shining stars who bowled individual games 20+ pins above average are Ryan-GOTO (159!), Lolet-SISIG (162!!! 126!), James-SISIG (179!), Lowen-BALUT (162!), Ivan-TAPSILOG (168! 181!!!), Angie-TAPSILOG (166! 168!), JP-KROPEK (159! 160!), Ed-LAPULAPU (152!), Mitchie-LAPULAPU (173!), Dennis-LAPULAPU (181!), and Art-MONAY (212! 190!).

  • Outstanding all night stellar performances by relentless, pulverizing teams were displayed by Team KROPEK/KILAWIN (Alice, Roy and JP) and Team SISIG (Lolet, Romy and James).  No mercy, they swept their opponents, hanep

Our winner of the 50/50 raffle tonight is (second time winner) Art Coronado of Team MONAY (money?), who won $45.  Thank you to Alice M for selling the raffle tickets this week.  Our pot is now at $236 with one more week to go, amazing.

Next week is our Halloween Costume Party and last week in regulation play.  Can't believe it is down to one last try to change the rankings.  Let's make it another exciting night, folks, complete with costume!

See y'all at the lanes!

10/21 Team ADOBO vs Team BALUT = EXCITING!

Week 7 of the Philly Pinoy Mixed Fall League (MFL), October 20, was our official WEAR PINK DAY in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  What a beautiful sea of pink the MFL players created at the Downingtown Palace tonight.  Our official photographer May Libo-on was on hand to capture all the kodak moments.  Thank you so much for showing your support!

Our marquee match-up between Team ADOBO and Team BALUT can only be described in one word: EXCITINGTeam ADOBO is composed of fashionista and up-and-coming bowler GRACE Que, quiet but deadly LINO Matamis ('musta po!  I am the #1 fan of your famous barbeque....), and the dormant (sandbagging? under-performing? malas?) genius of the lanes BLUE Sapalaran.  ADOBO (apart from being a delicious staple food for us Filipinos) is a dangerous team, as all three players can explode above their averages at any time.  Lino and Blue are both capable of scoring in the 200's.  Blue in particular has been plagued throughout the league with uncharacteristic (for Blue) low scores: we know he is bound to awaken from dormancy and bounce back, but when?

Team ADOBO (L-R): BLUE Sapalaran, GRACE Que and LINO Matamis

Team ADOBO promised us a blog-worthy performance, knowing that they are the marquee team of the week. Edmer, Lowen and I in Team BALUT were in fighting mode: at the bottom with only 1/2 point separating us from the 9th spot, we want to move UP!   I was feeling good after a stellar performance at Wednesday league and good practices all week.  Bring it ON!  And so it began....

Game 1 was neck and neck (talagang exciting!).  Lino was hot, throwing strike after strike, but Edmer was keeping up.  Grace was hitting her spares, even the dreaded 10-pin: naks, ang galing!  She actually consistently got her 10-pin spares all night =impressive!  Lowen, Blue and I were struggling but fought to keep it close.  It came down to Blue and me, the two anchors, in the 10th frame.  Alas, I fell short (missed my spare and only scored a 125) and Team BALUT lost by a measly 5 pins. I lost that game for us by playing below average by 30 pins!  Tuloy ang dasal, tuloy ang dasal....  Game 1 goes to ADOBO, but it is close: Hataw na, mga BALUT/SISIW!

Alice Mercado and String/Chona Aquino collaborated on selling the 50/50 raffle tickets tonight during Game 1: thank you, ladies!  Our winner of $40 in prize money, announced between the first and second games, is Lolet of Team SISIG.  Congratulations, she is a first time winner!  Full disclosure: our 50/50 pot is now at $191, which will be added to the prizes to be awarded to our MFL players.  Wow, limpak-limpak na salapi!

Hala na, while Team BALUT was planning to wake up and fight, the "sleeping giant" of Team ADOBO awoke: Game 2 was the BLUE SAPALARAN SHOW!  Deng (daing?), hanep sa galing!  Edmer continued to score above his average, I recovered from my Game 1 fiasco to get within one pin of my average, and Lowen continued to struggle.  But Blue blew us away with a 198 game, ably supported by sound performances from both Lino and Grace.  Concede, concede!  Walang habol!  Ngayon pa humataw si Blue, inspired daw!  Bakit kami pa?  Anak ng tipaklong, mai-itlog ba ang BALUT?  Pero, hindi pa tapos: laban laban LABAN!

Teka muna, pwede bang bumati? Love, support and TLC = priceless!

Back to the game....  BALUT came out fighting and making marks in Game 3: sa wakas, humahataw na ang BALUT/SISIW!  It was neck and neck from frame to frame = truly exciting!  I distracted myself by collecting and counting monies from the other pits and paying Palace our league fees.  The songs I sang my balls in the pahabol blogs paid off, Spinderella and Beast Ball were making marks for me (ako'y nasa langit na).  The other teams had wrapped up their play as we entered the 10th frame.  All other matchups had sweeps, but we still had a chance to prevent one.  This is it, Team BALUT!

OMG, spares were truly hard to come by in the 10th frame for Grace, Lowen, Lino and Edmer. Maybe it was distracting to have the entire league watching us, kay daming kantiyaw!  So, it came down to Blue and me again, but he had a strike in the 9th frame and I only had a spare.

As I picked up my Spinderella strike ball, I was hearing so many things from the peanut gallery: panalo na daw ang ADOBO, wala ba daw kayong bilib kay Jing, kaya ko daw mag tatlong strike (oh yeah! thank you! BowlStar yata ako, and, yes, I can do it!).  Nakatitig kayo sa puwet ko, pero here I go: stand here, throw there; breathe, focus.  I throw my first ball: anak ng ewan ko ba, strike!  Redemption, hope is ALIVE!

Then Blue throws his ball: 9 pins fall!  May sukling isa: may pag-asa lalo ang BALUT!

Focus, focus, breathe in, breath out.  I throw my ball: one pin remains standing!

Nobody is breathing as Blue throws his ball to make his spare.  His ball rolls towards the 6-pin, but looks wide left: miss!  Pandemonium, pandemonium, oh the humanity!  I am jumping up and down: Team BALUT unbelievably wins by two pins!  TWO PINS!  We avoid a sweep and get one win: naka-isa, magka-isa, pa-isa-isa, cha cha cha!

I can't even focus anymore and throw my ball into the gutter trying to get my 6-pin spare.  Game over, made my average after scoring a 180 (salamat!).

With Team SISIG getting swept by Team KROPEK in the pit next door, Team BALUT is now in 9th place.  As Dennis of Team LAPU-LAPU later said, ako lang ang masaya sa isang win.  We'll take it, yebah!  For the first time, BALUT is no longer in the bottom!

But truly, truly have to hand it to my team: I may have delivered in the 10th frame but Lowen's 150+ game and Edmer playing above average all night long made it a tremendous team effort and much deserved win for the BALUT Bandits.  Go Team BALUT/SISIW!!!  Fight, team, fight!

So here are the unofficial standings.  The official standings will be posted on the Palace website.

I should be working overtime, I'm so behind...!  I should be sleeping!  But here I am blogging coz I am so hyped up after tonight.  Jay of Team DAING (#1!) was right = the blog will get written, and it will be a long one and it be posted quickly (the opposite would have happened if we lost: short and late!).  I am happy coz we are no longer in the bottom:  Go Team BALUT!  Also played at my 153 MFL average tonight and got a 450+ series, which allows me to narrowly hold on to my MFL top female average slot = my perch is precarious, I need to find my mojo.
Mitchie-LAPULAPU, Alice-KROPEK/KILAWIN, and Angie-TAPSILOG all had stellar games much, much better than mine tonight.  Congratulations on your fantabulous performances, my fellow female bowlers!

Congratulations to all the winners and to all the players who did so well tonight.  And to those who were swept, do not lose hope!  Another week, another opponent, another set of lanes to show your mettle: Fight, fight, FIGHT!

My fellow MFL players, there are only two more nights in regulation play, then we have a bye week before our finals on November 17.  The chances to move up and down the rankings are running out: who will reign supreme and win the jackpot prize money?  I can hardly believe how time has flown.  We are truly having fun, so we are ALL winners!  Thank you for all the fellowship, joy and positive energy you bring to the league and all its participants.

Not sure if there will be a pahabol blog this week.  It may need to be a bye week for me from writing a second blog post for the MFL, but you know it is not for lack of inspiration!  Too busy, people.  Like I said, I should actually be working right now but the blog was calling to me....

Till next time, leaguers, see y'all at the lanes.  Let's get ready for Week 8.  Bowl, baby, BOWL!

Galing ninyo, Team DAING, bow!

O ang Team DAING
Pag sila at hot
Ang mga kalaban
Ay nalalagot
Lanie, Jay at Joel
Pag humahataw

Mahirap basahin at
 'Di pa nagmamarka

Dati naman
Ako'y pinagbibigyan
Bakit ngayon, kay torpe niyo -
Sadyang nakakaloka!

Mahal kita, mahal kita
Mahal kong bola
Mag-strike ka ng isang beses
Ako'y nasa langit na!

Nguni't buwisit ka, o buwisit ka
Ibabangko na kita
Gumawa ka naman kahit
MINSAN....

Teams of four ulit, tulad ng dati. Hala bira!

Pasensiya na kayo, wala munang QUIZ TIME itong pahabol blog ngayong linggo.  Malapit nang mag-Linggo, kitakits tayo bukas!

Bowl, baby, BOWL!

10/13 DAING! (O what could have been...)

It is Week 6 of the Philly Pinoy Mixed Fall League (MFL), and Team BALUT is up against Team DAING, with Lanie, Jay and Joel D.  Team BALUT had their orange shirts on while Team DAING was decked in black.  Team BALUT was coming off its first winning week last week against Team GOTO (3.5-0.5, baby!), but Team DAING is the second ranked team, fighting for the top slot currently held by Team PISBOL.

Team DAING (L-R): JAY Lizardo, LANIE Santos and JOEL Deo

We wanted to get hot early, as Team DAING is known to explode and collectively score above average.  It was hard to get our groove on the lanes though, and while we tried to keep it close, Team DAING and especially their hot anchor Joel D, was throwing their share of strikes.  So we conceded Game 1.  Keep fighting, Team BALUT!

And fight we did!  Game 2 was neck and neck from frame to frame, exciting!  Lowen was hot, hitting strikes and spares galore, whoo hoo!  Edmer was throwing his share of strikes, and I was happy to be getting marks (matipid sa strike!).  Lowen, Edmer and I each had strikes in the 9th frame: it was anybody's game going into the 10th frame.  That was when Edmer, the Bandidong Balut, showed his mettle and hit three strikes in a row, winning it for us!  I could not get my spare, but we still won the game by 7 pins.  OMG, we got a win, it is a tie, go team!  Sumipa and SISIW sa loob ng BALUT!

Game 3 was a battle of epic proportions, a fight to the finish!  The lanes were getting unpredictable, marks were harder to come by.  The curse of the open frame was befalling us all. But as luck would have it, as everyone got done, it fell on me to decide the ultimate outcome: three strikes in the 10th frame would win the game for Team BALUT.  My bowling angels were whispering words of encouragement, we can do this!  Alas, my first ball left two pins, so Game 3 goes to Team DAING.  I got my spare and my last ball was a strike, but it was not enough.  Mahirap talagang maglaro nang nakatitig kayo sa puwet ko....*hikbi*  DAING, that was much closer than the outcome reflects: Team BALUT will live to fight another day!  One win and three losses for Team BALUT, we are still in the bottom.  Great game, Team DAING!

So here are the unofficial standings after this evening's matchups.  Remember to check the Palace website for the official league standings.
