11/02 Viva Bowloween (Bowl-O-Win!)

WOW.  I thought nothing could top the costumes and get-ups from last year’s Philly Pinoy Mixed Fall League (MFL) Bowloween Night.  Boy, was I wrong!  It was Week 9 of the 2014 MFL this past Sunday, November 2, which I had dubbed the “Bihis and Bayad Day” since folks were to come in costume (bihis!) and pay all bowling fees till Finals Night (last three weeks of the MFL = bayad!).  It was an intriguing and colorful cast of characters that came to play:  Justice League was in full force throughout Limerick Bowl, lots of superhero guys, gals and kids, and some unrecognizable folks.  Wow, I was speechless, you guys truly outdid yourselves: applause, applause!  Here are some cool photo collages, courtesy of our resident photographer, who never fails to make us all look super ganda, May Libo-on.

And here’s my lyrical limerick on the magical mayhem that was our 2014 MFL Bowloween!

Look, look
Kulot kanilang buhok
Maraming super hero
May pirata’t inhinyero
Zorro’ng may salamin
At si Batman man din
Mga bigote’t balbas
Six-pack nakalabas (at keg din…)
Reynang Malificent
Masks na iridescent
Jessie Cowgirl plus Horse
Mga pizza kids, of course
But the winner is the hunchback
With the big itak
Unbelievable, indescribable
“Only in the MFL”-able
Super galing-galing y’all
Wow
Bow

And here for posterity is our group photo courtesy of our resident photographer and now unprecedented three-time winner of the Lucky Strike 50/50 raffles, May Libo-on.  Thank you and congratulations!

Team Papaya’s opponent for Week 9 was Team Lansones, and we were on lanes 35-36 on the far right.  Team Lansones, with Jojo Sangalang, Lanie Santos and Joel Deo, has the highest team average second to Team Atis, so Team Papaya actually was given 5 pins handicap per game: yeah!  New MFLer Jojo is a constant mention in our Breakthrough Performance and Shining Star sections of the blog: dangerous when hot!  In her Jessie the Cowgirl from Toy Story get-up for Bowloween was our Dalagang Pilipina bowler with her super hinhin approach, Lanie.  Lansones anchor Joel D¸dressed as Super Man complete with red cape and with Super Boy in tow, is a frequent 200-clubber who bowled us away with a fantabulous performance on Week 1.  Team Lansones is collectively nakaka-sindak as an opponent, as all three players are capable of exploding with fantastic play.  It seems sheer bad luck that they are at the bottom with only 10 wins on record, an outcome they seem to attribute to “peaking too early.”  But then that also means that they can spoil it for the rest of us, so we better watch out!  Here is a photo of Team Lansones, courtesy of May Libo-on.

Before we started I noticed that Jon of Team Mangga (in lanes 33-34, playing against the blind scores of Team Duhat, all absent) was also dressed as Super Man but clearly had some six-pack abs printed on his Super Man costume.  So I asked Super Man Joel D: “Bakit siya, may six-pack, ikaw wala (why does he have a six pack and you don’t)?”  To which Joel replied: “Keg itong akin (mine is a keg!)” Galing….bow.

Not sure if we were distracted by our costumes (It is hard to bowl with a cape…), or our neighbor’s costumes (Who is that with Medusa hair? Oh, it’s Derek.  Is James a horse or tikbalang?  Nice moustache, Desi, kitang kita…), but we all struggled in Game 1.  Warm up only?  It became a battle of survival, matira ang makaka-average.  As luck would have it, Joel D got done playing before I got ready to throw my first ball for the 10th frame, and we already had a win.  Yippee!  No pressure for the Papaya anchor!  But of course I made sure to still add to our advantage, coz you never know….  Game 1 goes to Team Papaya by 41 pins.

Game 2 and we could hear the Super Man theme music playing: Joel D was hot and building a fence!

He strikes!  He spares!
We struggle and despair!
Oh me, oh my
We are patay!

I distract myself with collecting monies, since all the payments are due.  I make chika and chismis, I tell folks that as Wonder Woman, I am wondering what the heck I am doing on the lanes.  We tried to keep it close, but as Joel D logs a 236 game and the 10th frame is done, the difference is a whopping 82 pins.  Game 2 goes to Team Lansones by a landslide.  Ayayay!

My struggles continued but luckily, I am surrounded by greatness embodied in the father and son duo who are my teammates.  As Gabriel the Wonder Kid was horsing around dressed as the Horse Pizza, he galloped himself into doubles and turkeys and spares and such.  Whoa!  Giddyup!  Go Pizza Boy/Horse!  Go Wonder Kid!  I even saw a shadow of a smile…  James found his line and started to build his own fence: go go GO, our secret anchor!  Team Lansones collectively plays close to their averages, keeping it close, but James logs a 198 and Gabe, wonderful Gabe, scores a 146.  Once more, the game is ours before I can throw my ball, which was good coz I get an ugly split and scored a 148, which is only 2 pins above the Wonder Kid’s score.  Thanks to the amazing Ques, Game 3 goes to Team Papaya.

Thinking we have another tie (third week in a row), we are surprised to see not two but three green check marks for Team Papaya on the screen.  We won ?! Apparently, we got Total Pins by THREE pins, since Game 3 was won by 44 pins.  Add to that the Game 1 Papaya advantage of 41 pins and we apparently were able to surpass the seemingly insurmountable landslide win by 82 pins that Team Lansones had in the second game.  Wow, that’s karma for you: we narrowly missed the win last week by two pins and settled for a tie, while this week we were settling for a tie and narrowly win by three pins.  Gulong ng palad, the pin falls where the pin falls and sometimes it is beeree pinpul (very painful).  Kudos on the courageous play from Team Lansones, who proved to be such gracious and ferocious competitors.  Unfortunately, the pin falls fell in favor of Fafaya, este, Papaya (try to say that sentence fast, I dare yah!).

OMG
We got three
Surprise, surprise
We got the prize
Not expecting
Not suspecting
By three pins
To get a win!

Viva la Bowl-O-Win!  Hasta la Halloween!  Colorful and exciting matches were being raged all around.  On the lanes beside us, Team Mangga pulled off a sweep against the blind scores of Team Duhat (nang sila ay mag-absent).  Team Durian gave up only Game 1 to Team Bayabas (pinaasa lang) and ran off with the rest of the match with stellar play from the Bowlinator’s secret weapon, Paul Ficcara: way to go!  Team Guyabano was merciless against Team Suha, but Team Suha fought back to grab Game 3 to prevent a sweep.  Team Langka was unstoppable against the beleaguered Team Atis, taking all four points and handing Team Atis yet another heart-breaking loss.  One point was all Team Pakwan could manage to win off their match against the red hot Santol Team (must have been some kryptonite in Jay’s lucky Mohawk hair…).  Lastly, yet another Bowlinator, Blue, was being bowlstered by his magnificent Maleficent teammate, Grace, as Team Chico pulled off three points against Team Rambutan (must have been the power in Blue’s bigote and Grace’s sungay…).  There were lots of gayuma, anting-anting and kryptonite this past Bowloween Sunday, overall quite a memorable outing.

Here is the rundown of fantabulous performances for MFL Week 9.

Top Male Players: Top three players from previous week hold on to their rankings.  Romy’s average continues to meteorically rise, but my GoPapa Joel has a commanding lead of galactic proportions amounting to three hundred pins.  Go Papa!

1.     Joel C (Atis) 204 = 5531 pins
2.     Romy (Guyabano) 193 = 5234 pins
3.     Paolo (Bayabas) 188 = 5085 pins

Top Female Players:  Momentum is on my bowling angel Angie’s side as she takes the 1st place spot this week with a 2 pin advantage on your BowlStar blogger, who is lucky to hold on to 2nd place.  It is anybody’s game as our pin difference with Mitchie in 3rd place is less than 100 pins.  Week 10 decides it all: go Philly Pins!

1.     Angie (Langka) 159.26 = 4300 pins
2.     Jing (Papaya) 159.18 = 4298 pins
3.     Mitchie (Mangga) 155 = 4207 pins

200-Clubbers:  We amazingly have TEN (10) this week, including two fabulously fierce and fantastic female bowlers: go go GO, Philly Pins!  Congratulations to y’all on your amazing games!

·        Romy (Guyabano): 259 (tie with Joel C for highest scratch score), 242
·        Paolo (Bayabas): 247, 201
·        Rico (Langka): 243
·        Joel D (Lansones): 236
·        Blue (Chico): 229, 230
·        Roy (Suha): 222
·        Paul (Durian): 210
·        Joel C (Atis): 204
·        Angie (Langka): 204
·        Mitchie (Mangga): 200

BREAKTHROUGH PLAYERS who logged averages for the night that were more than 10 pins above their previous average are:

·        Blue (Chico):  Bowlinator Blue had scores of 131, 229 and 230 for a 196 Sunday average against his previous 176 average.  Way to go!
·        Roy (Suha):  This Lord of the Lanes came in with a 146 average and had scores of 222, 141 and 132: 165 average, baby!  Happy, Happy Birthday!
·        Paolo (Bayabas):  With scores of 168, 247 and 201 against 186 previous average, he had a 205 average for the night.  Yebah!  It’s the hair….
·        Paul (Durian):  My Bowlinator teammate was on fire this Sunday, logging games of 111, 163 and an amazing 210 against a 145 previous average.  Wow!
·        Edwin (Suha):  His scores were 161, 167 and 183 against a previous average of 170.  Continuous improvement initiative = successful!

KILLER TEAM OF THE WEEK is Team Langka with Angie, Rico and Rolly, who all had above-average performances that led to a decisive sweep against their opponent, Team Atis.  My Philly Pin teammate and beloved bowling angel Angie had scores of 204 (!), 168 and 161 for a Week 9 average of 177 and 533 series against a 156 average coming in: super galing-galing!  Rico (suave…) had scores of 182, 243 (!) and 171 for an “oh my golly golay” 198 (!) average for the night against a 179 previous average.  And up and coming bowler Rolly came in with a 121 average and logged a 131 average for the night with scores of 124, 138 and 131.  Wow, you truly were an unstoppable League of Super Bowlers this past Sunday.  Congratulations on your great team effort!

PLAYER OF THE WEEK  is Derek (Mangga) who logged games of 151, 124 and 151 for a 142 average for the night against a previous average of 118.   The super curly Medusa hair turned him into an amazing bowling whiz!  Strikes!  Spares!  Wow!  And once again WOW!  So glad you joined us!

Our super breakthrough ALL STAR PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK was from none other than Romy (the rampaging Guyabano anchor) for fantastic scores of 259 (!), 242 (!) and 184 which gave him a 228 (!) average and 685 series for the night against a previous 189 average.  That’s 39 pins above average.  He had mentioned last week that prior to the Papaya-Guyabano matchup that he had logged a 230 average series during practice: it is good to see that he can log similar performances at league.  Magaling talaga  Congratulations!

SHINING STARS with outstanding games are James (198), Ed (193, wow!), Jay (167, 178), Alice (172), Edmer (169), Ivan (167), Rosie (158), Grace (150), Jun (149, 146), Chelo (149), and last but not least, Gabriel the Wonder Kid (146).  Congratulations for lighting up Limerick with your stellar play!

LUCKY STRIKE RAFFLE (50/50): Thank you, dear Lerma Sapalaran, for taking care of the raffles this Sunday in Alice’s absence.  Our poor players had limited datung from paying the remaining bowling fees for the league, but our lucky third time winner, May Libo-on, still won $24 with her lucky ticket. Congratulations!   Our pot of additional prize money from the raffles is now $333.  Thank you so much for participating in our weekly raffles, everybody!  Since there are no more bowling fees due (we are all paid!), you must strongly consider spending your cash on our very last Lucky Strike 50/50 raffle this coming Sunday.  Remember that all proceeds will go back to you, our players.

NOTE ON PRIZES FOR THE 2014 MFL:  The individual prizes for the top male and female averages, handicap series, scratch series, handicap game and scratch game will be awarded on our Finals Night based on the performances logged by MFL Week 10, which is the last week in regulation play, which is this coming Sunday, November 9.  Y’all have just one more week to secure your slots for these individual prizes.  We will be awarding prizes for the top three male and female players this year (high averages).  For the handicap/scratch series/game awards, there will be two male players and one female player getting each award.  Each player is eligible for only ONE award, and of course we will ensure that the deserving individuals get the highest prize they are eligible for.  Please also note that we have bolstered the team cash awards and the individual prizes based on the Lucky Strike 50/50 raffle earnings.  Limpak limpak na salapi!

WHAT TO EXPECT ON FINALS NIGHT:

·        It will be Filipino shirt day on our Finals Week, November 16.  Go find and wash those Filipino shirts already!
·        Matches will be position round, with #1 playing against #2, #3 against #4, and so on up to #13 playing against #14, based on team rankings from Week 10 of regulation play.  It will be the same three-game, four-point format as we have done in regulation play, but the winner takes the higher team ranking.  So, for example, if the #2 team beats the #1 team (Team Guyabano) during the Finals, the winning team is declared the #1 team and wins the $300 cash prize.  In case of a tie, each team retains their Week 10 ranking.
·        We will have a potluck dinner at the Limerick Bowl Party Room after bowling.  Cash prizes will be awarded right after the matches, so please be prepared to stay later than our usual 8 PM-ish wrap-up time.
·        Any other questions, please let JC Squared know.

LOOKING AHEAD TO WEEK 10:  Please be reminded that there is no theme scheduled this Sunday, November 9: wear whatever you fancy!  Team Papaya is up against Team Rambutan.  Other match-ups in store on our last week of regulation play are Team Pakwan vs. Team Duhat, Team Suha vs. Team Lansones, Team Guyabano vs. Team Bayabas, Team Durian vs. Team Mangga,  Team Langka vs. Team Chico, and Team Atis vs. Team Santol.  Wow, matitinik na tambalan.  With the teams currently on 2nd to 4th place only separated by one win, it is still anybody’s guess who will be matched up in the finals for the top four spots.  Exciting!

Our Finals and the conclusion of the 2014 MFL are less than two weeks away.  Who will reign supreme in this year’s MFL Super Bowl Sunday?  O what exciting battles await us all in the next two weekends!

See you at the lanes, dear MFL players.  Bowl, baby, bowl!
