I was asked what the theme was for this past Sunday’s Philly Pinoy Mixed Fall League (MFL) Week 4 and I answered, “Wala, as in walang suot!” But of course we were fully clothed (Rated G only) for the Week 4 matches, but with no prevailing theme. Next week is PINK Week, remember, remember! Pink underwear is optional…
Our marquee match of the week was Team Papaya against Team Atis. Whoo hoo, Kulambo War, Giyera de Patani, household bragging rights on the line! It was JC squared against JC, with Team Atis (At Ease) being led by my Go Papa, bowl whisperer supreme and Overlord of the Lord of the Lanes Joel Capucao, with his ultra consistent and ever improving teammates Lolet Pike, who still has the record for highest female scratch score of 197 (yebah!) and our perennial bowling practice partner, famous for the most scrumptious and mouth-watering barbeque this side of heaven, Lino Matamis, super tamis walang kawangis! Team Atis has been hot hot hot the past few weeks, performing at unparalleled levels, exploding upon unsuspecting opponents and blowing them away with above average play. My Go Papa Joel has been unbeatable, banging out 200+ games and maintaining his 200+ average week after week. Were we intimidated? Nah, I’m his kryptonite (right, Eden?): we were going to fight fight FIGHT! The Giyera de Patani was ON!
PATALASTAS MUNA: I was tempted to call this the Polvo War, as I make a shameless plug for my employer, Johnson & Johnson, and our famous product, a favorite among Filipinos and bowlers, and of course Filipino bowlers, Johnson's Baby Powder. I had gotten travel size Johnson's Baby Powders from our company store, which I had handed to my Philly Pins teammates (Mitchie, Angie and Giovie) during our Wednesday night USBC league, when I told them of a true story about a housewife in an Eat Bulaga quiz contest (alam niyo ba ito?). The answer to the quiz question that the housewife could not get was ASIN (salt). So Tito, Vic or Joey tried to help her out by asking her “Misis, nilalagay ninyo ito sa itlog ng mister niyo sa umaga” (you put this on your husband’s eggs in the morning) to which poor ale answered “Polvo?” (powder?) Ayayayay! Reminder, Rated G tayo, Rated G (as in gaga…hacheche!).

Practice started too quickly
and we were off. My teammates started
with marks and I started with a gutter ball, nerves getting the better of me:
please, no more canal-ations, my team needs a fighting chance! Team Atis kept it close, but with our Go Papa-Ya pasimuno and secret anchor James bowling
above average and everyone else staying close to or below their averages, Team
Papaya takes Game 1 by 37 pins. Naka-isa, yeah!
Ayan na, nagising na si Joel at ang Team Atis sa
Game 2. Joel switched balls and found
his line and started strings of strikes (I think he is building me a white picket
fence, how romantic…). At one point,
Lino, Lolet and Joel all had strikes and doubles on the board. “Enough daw,
sabi ni Joel!” Hala, enough is
enough din, says Team Papaya, as
James, Gabriel and I answer with strikes of our own! Alas, Atis was truly At Ease pulverizing us
(polvo, anyone?), and with Lolet scoring a 151 and Joel’s bakod resulting in a 242, Game 2 goes to Atis. Tied at one all, bring it on!
Galit na si
James, gagawa rin daw siya ng bakod!
Both James and Joel were exchanging strikes in the third game. Lino and Lolet
were trying hard to stay close to their averages. Gabriel was on, making some
amazing conversions and keeping it close.
I was thanking Grace of Team Chico for her amazing family, who were
saving us as I struggled till the last few frames. As the last frame came up, it was dead tied
with all players left to play. Both
James and Gabriel converted on spares to give me some breathing room, but not
much. The difference is less than 20
pins as JC and JC get ready to finish things off. I throw my first ball and get a rare strike,
but my second ball gives me a split. Joel needs three strikes, gets one then the second ball does not strike. So as luck would have it,
it is enough for Team Papaya as we take Game 3 and total pins. Sorry for the loss, my better half, but go go
go, my GoPapa Joel, for logging a 650 series with scores of 173, 242 and 235
and a 216 average for the night: super amazing play, my kryptonite (gayumang walang bisa) has been rendered
powerless by your bowling might. Go
PAPAYA, winning three points in the face of such amazing play.
On the other lanes, my godsister
Brenda’s Team Duhat (nang kita’y
masilayan) swept Team Rambutan, as Rambutan’s Rosie’s fabulous run was not
enough to overcome Victor and Jeff’s combined powers. Team Bayabas had to be content with just one
win against the mighty onslaught of Team Santol. My bowling angel Angie is happy, as she was
able to pull off a tie in Game 3 and give her Team Langka an “almost” sweep with
3½ points against Team Suha, which came away with ½ point (better than none). Team Guyabano made short work of Team Mangga,
pinaasa lang sa Game 1. To the left of us, Team Pakwan sapak’d Team
Lansones, pinaasa lang din sa Game
1. And lastly, to the right of us, Team Chico’s
Dennis and Blue continued to dominate their competition, as Team Durian’s fierce
performance could not land them more than one win.
The league standings were posted at the Limerick Bowl website this Monday. Here is a summary of current team rankings from the league standing sheets from Week 4. Teams Guyabano and Chico hold on to the #1 and #2 spots and are slowly increasing their lead: wow, my Bowlinator teammates Romy of Guyabano and Blue of Chico are determined to win win WIN! Wonder of wonders, my beloved Team Papaya is in third place. Yebah ebah ebah ebah!

Once more, with pride, let me present the rundown of fantabulous performances from the 2014 MFL Week 4.
Top Male Players: My Team Papaya secret anchor James has broken through the top three, congratulations! My GoPapa Joel, unbowlievably INCREASED his 200+ average even more: super amazing, love you (naks)!
1. Joel C (Atis) 210
2. Paolo (Bayabas) 191
3. James (Papaya) 190
Top Female Players: The Philly Pins continue to be the top three gals in the MFL: consistent!
1. Jing (Papaya) 158
2. Mitchie (Mangga) 157
3. Angie (Langka) 153
200-Clubbers: We have six (6) this week. Hopefully we can add female bowlers to this list soon…
·
Joel C (Atis):
242, 235
·
Rico (Langka):
225
·
James (Go
Papaya!): 224
·
Blue (Chico):
219, 201 = wow, hot streak continues!
·
July (Durian):
206
·
Romy (Guyabano):
204, 202 = welcome to the club!
1. Jeff (Duhat): He kept telling me about his 140 game, his 140 game,
but when I checked the score sheets, he had two games in the 190s! Cheeky…Chucky? I guess he wishes that the 140 game was as
high as the others! With a 145 average
going in and scores of 190, 145 and 191 for a 175 average for the night, Jeff
played a whopping 30 pins above his average on Week 4. Ah-may-zing… Warning: he is looking forward
to thwarting Team Guyabano’s winning streak come Week 5: yeah, ambition! May your hot streak continue!
2. Ed (Santol): Coming in with a 133 average and scoring
132, 192 and 158, Ed played at 27 pins above his average, logging a 160 average
for the night. Hanep, way to go!
3. Blue (Chico): Is he hot or what? Blue seems unstoppable, and truly determined
to bulldoze through the competition. With
scores of 183, 219 and 201 against a previous average of 176, his average on
Week 4 was 201 (wow, 25 pins above average!).
Yebah!
4. Rolly (Langka): Still struggling and still learning, he found his
groove and turned into a lethal and not so secret weapon! Rolly had scores of 144, 119 and 138 for a 133
average that was 23 pins above his previous average of 110. Breakthrough!
Great job!
5.
Lanie (Lansones) and Alice (Santol): Both these lovely ladies had a fantastic 160 average
for the night. Lanie played 21 pins
above her average, with a 139 previous average and scores of 183, 154 and 145. Alice played 20 pins above average, scoring
166, 140 and 176 against her previous average of 140. True dalagang
Pilipina, except Maria Clara turned
into Gabriela Silang, sugod!
6. Romy (Guyabano)
and Rico (Langka): Talk about
coincidences, both of these talented Team Captains had 171 averages going in,
had 200 games and had a 188 average for the night (17 pins above average): what
are the odds? Romy had scores of 204,
159 and 202. Rico was under the weather
but still was able log scores of 225, 184 and 157. Twin-tastic!
Way to go!
7.
Desi (Bayabas): Happy Birthday, o perennial bowling practice partner! Happy na,
Birthday pa, Desi had scores of 162,
180 and 158 against a 149 average going in.
That’s 17 pins above average and a166 average for the night. Hataw, sayaw!
·
Dennis (Chico):
Mojo? Check! Proving that he truly is
back, Dennis had 164 average for the night against 151 average going in (13
pins above average). Scores were 167,
157 and 168. Consistent!
·
Rosie (Rambutan): Rosie had 138 average going in,
and scored 145, 147 and 158 for a 150 average for the night (12 pins above
average). Super galing! Love your follow
through!
·
James (Papaya): My secret anchor James had a fabulous 199
average for the night with a 188 previous average, after logging scores of 192,
182 and 224 to clinch three points for Team Papaya. Yebah
ebah ebah ebah!
·
Paul (Durian): Paul, my Bowlinator teammate, turned pro with scores
of 136, 170 and 153 for a 153 average for the night against a previous 142
average (11 pins above average). Great
job! The Bowlinators are looking good for the winter league, ah, I like it!
·
Chelo (Pakwan):
Scores of 140, 136 and 149 gave
Chelo (a.k.a. Chloe) a 142 average for the night against a 132 average going
in: 10 pins above average for the night and above average all night long. Hanep,
go Chelo Babe!
·
Jun (Rambutan):
Our new Bowlcoholic practice partner (with wife Giovie of Team Durian) had
scores of 140, 122 and 134 against a 123 average = 132 average for the night (9
pins above average). Practice pays off!
·
JC Squared (Papaya at Atis): Casa
Capucao had happy campers with respect to individual performance, although
there had to be a loser in our marquee matchup.... I had a 165 average for the night against previous 156 average
(scores were 159, 180 and 158): BowlStar! Sana’y
wala nang wakas, nguni’t gaano kadalas ang minsan pa nating hagkan ang nakaraan?
Sorry, halatang nakikinig ng Basil Valdez… My Go Papa Joel already had an incredibowl 208
average going in. With scores of 173,
242 and 235, he had a 216 (yes, 216!) average for the night, 8 pins above
average. It is already Week 4 and he has
maintained and even increased his 200+ average to 210. Unbelievabowl, but then again, he is my Go
Papa Joel, truly the better half of JC Squared (kahit talo, sorry). I know I
am biased, but he is my PLAYER OF THE WEEK this week and every week, for being
so fabowlously consistent and competitive but still so generous with his time
and talent. Ngayon at kailanman, sumpa ko’y iibigin ka hanggang sa dulo ng walang hanggan dahil ikaw ang Mr. Universe ng buhay
ko! Yep, another pledge of undying
love in the blog, whatevs…ngik ngik ngik!
·
Thank you to the
Team Captains and players for keeping up to date with your bowling fees and
keeping the records legible and complete.
My stress level with respect to paniningil
has dropped considerably, thanks to your diligence and sense of responsibility,
naks!
·
Please note that by Week 9, November 2, all bowling
fees for our 11 weeks of play (including Finals) must be paid in full. This will
allow Limerick Bowl to have the monies ready for us to award the prizes to y’all
on Finals Night. You are thereby greatly
encouraged to pay more than the $15 required each week, to plan ahead towards
having all 11 weeks of MFL play paid within the next 5 weeks. Credit card payments are accepted at the
desk, if this is more convenient for you.
·
How many married
couples are peppered throughout the league?
Here is my accounting (paki-edit,
Angie at Brenda!):
1. Grace (Chico) and James (Papaya) Que
2. Giovie (Durian) and Jun (Rambutan) Young
3. Angie (Langka) and Edmer (Pakwan) Sotomango
4. Mitchie (Mangga) and Ivan (Pakwan) Masanga
5. Alice (Santol) and Joel (Lansones) Deo
6. Brenda and Jeff Cooper (Duhat)
7. Mila (Bayabas) and Jojo (Lansones) Sangalang
8. Rosie (Rambutan) and Jon (Mangga) Cainglet
9. Jing (Papaya) and Joel (Atis) Capucao
·
How many balls
does my bowling bag hold? Three (3). Do I get to throw them all every week? Sometimes…
Do I sometimes want to throw them all down the lane at the same
time? Yeah! But I only have two hands…
·
I name my bowling
balls (and love talking about them). I have mentioned my new 12-lb
spare ball Wendy before (Track
Spare+, beautifully colored in Halloween theme of black, orange and white). My red 12-lb strike ball is Cruella da Ball (Ebonite Cyclone, twin
of Rolly’s new ball!). My 11-lb backup
birthday cake scented ("smell my ball") purple strike ball is Cake Boss (Storm Tropical Breeze).
My bag contains Cruella, Wendy and Cake Boss. I have an older and lighter 11-lb red spare
ball called Hot Mama (mainit init pa) which was replaced by
Wendy. I also have an 11-lb DV8 Misfit
that I have shelved call Beast Ball,
and my original 11-lb Ebonite Cyclone named Spinderella. If you are
interested in any of my 11-lb balls, let me know!
·
Our score sheets
are verified every week against the league standing sheets by none other than
my beloved godsister Brenda del Rosario
Cooper of Team Duhat, an experienced
Quality Auditor with an advanced degree in food science. Chef extraordinaire, she hails from the bulubundukins of Los Banos, Laguna, like
yours truly. Love yah! Many thanks for your help! Brenda now bowls with my original 10-lb
balls, Pinky (Columbia spare ball)
and Dora (Brunswick Slingshot).
