10/12 MFL Week 6 Malangis!

Was I pressured to give you an especially good blog this week?  You betcha!  There are lots of good stories to tell, many highlights to recount.

There was no theme today for Week 6 of the Philly Pinoy Mixed Fall League (MFL).  I had sent text messages to my Team Papaya teammate James Que to coordinate on the color of our attire.  “Black and blue” was the reply, but it came too late!  So our team colors were “Black and blue…and PINK!”  Makulay!

Our marquee matchup of the week was Team Papaya versus Team Santol, hot off a sweep on Week 5 of Team Lansones in the epic Deo vs Deo Giyera de Patani.  Team Santol’s team captain is Philly Pinoy’s Sports Commish Jay Lizardo, and his teammates are Bowlcoholic Ed Nicolas (who was absent due to death in the family) and my idol (oh how I envy her swing!) Alice Deo.  All three players are MFL veterans, making a mark in last year’s league.  Jay was in the winning team of the 2013 MFL, Team Daing (as in “Daing! Ang gagaling nila!”), with Joel Deo and Lanie Santos.  [Factoid: Joel D and Lanie are still in the same team this year, Team Lansones, with Jay’s place taken by Jojo Sangalang.]  Alice was in the second place team of the 2013 MFL, Team Kropek/Kilawin with Roy and JP Tanedo (not in 2014 roster).  Wow, two Santol teammates were in last year’s finals!  Ed was in Team Lapulapu with Mitchie and Dennis, where he gained a reputation for “sandbagging” his average, as he always seemed to play above average!  That’s what naturally happens when you have continuous improvement, di ba, Pareng Ed?  Here is a photo of Team Santol, courtesy of May Libo-on.

There were a couple of couples matched against each other tonight.  The Battle of the Young Ones (Once?) pitted Giovie of Team Durian with hubby Jun of Team Rambutan in the lanes next to us.  At the farmost left lanes were Chelo of Team Pakwan matched against Roy of Team Suha on the Compendio Game of Throwns.  Previously, Jon of Team Mangga had prevailed over wife Rosie of Team Rambutan.  But the gals reigned supreme when my Team Papaya defeated my Go Papa Joel’s Team Atis, and last week, Alice’s Team Santol swept Joel D’s Team Lansones.  The momentum is with the ladies: go gals!

Alice and I ended up looking like we were teammates: matching pink shirts, yeah!  And Jay, Man in Black, looked like he was teamed with James and Gabriel in their black and blue shirts.

They were still oiling our lanes when practice was about to start.  And that seemed to be the theme of the night: OIL, lots of it, too much of it.  We could swear that gallons of oil were laid out on those lanes.  Binuhos at inubos ang langis sa lanes.  I sing to those oily lanes, in the tune of Sharon Cuneta’s Tubig at Langis:

Sobra ang langis
Bola’y di umiikot
Sobra ang langis
Sa mga pins ang bola ay dumadaplis
O kay bilis niyang lumihis
O kay saklap, puro mintis…

And oh, how those lanes flummoxed poor James all night long: he was not getting the ball reaction he needed!  On the other hand, oil was not a factor for Jay or Gabriel, since they throw straight balls.  Alice and I did okay on the first game, as we could still compensate for the oiliness by adjusting on the lanes.  Jay and Alice fought to keep it close, and James was struggling, but with some amazing play from the Wonder Kid Gabriel, and some 10th frame heroics from your “no longer pusong sawi” happy blogger (naks!), we took the first game by 38 pins.  Thank you to my coach, Donna Roberts, who is helping me become a prow-pey-show-nahl amateur!

By the second game, the lanes were getting the better of me as well, but I fought to shake “the curse of the open frame” by switching from Cruella da Ball (which kept coming up short, ayaw lumiko!) to my Cake Boss (in retrospect, maybe I waited too long…).  I tried hard to keep up with Alice, who was throwing strikes, which was scarily reminiscent of her breakthrough week against hubby Joel D, before the oil started doing a number on her ball’s trajectory as well.

Gabriel continued to play amazingly well.  Throughout that second game, we kept asking him to “save us!” coz he was playing better than both James and me.  Thank you, Grace and James, for this wonder of a kid Gabriel!  His smiles don’t come cheap, though, matipid siya sa ngiti.  At the end of a strike, his Tito Olee of Team Rambutan on the next lanes was saying, “Smile, I’ll pay you 50 cents!” to which we said that was too low: piso, piso!

In the end it was Commish Jay with his straight ball who took Game 2 by the proverbial balls (pun intended).  He found his line, hit his stride and was suddenly hot hot HOT, so hot it was raining strikes, spares and amazing marks galore, resulting in a 180 game.  Hanep, we were watching “The Jay Lizardo Show” as his proud parents watched on!  Game 2 goes to Team Santol and it is DEAD TIED since Team Santol’s win was by the same margin Team Papaya had in Game 1, which was 38 pins.

Game 3, game on: winner takes all!  James lamented that he could not strike at all in that third game.  Alas his night was a wash, but that’s okay coz tonight was the night Gabriel and I got to take the heat off our secret anchor, who has won it for Team Papaya with his amazing play for so many of the past weeks: go team!  You will be back, James, ikaw pa, babalik ka rin!  Gabriel the Wonder Kid got unbelievably even better in Game 3, galing galing, mana kay Grace.  The BowlStar was back, playing a clean game as my Cake Boss delivered the goods.  Jay and Alice were not giving up and kept it close, so close that when it got to the 10th frame with only Alice and me left to play, the difference was a mere 3 pins.  Alice had a strike going in and I had a spare, patay kang bata ka, hihikain ako sa excitement!  Jay and James started discussing the different scenarios where either team could win: hacheche, let me throw the ball nalang, hindi kaya ng powers ko yang mga iniisip ninyo!  Alice throws her ball…and leaves the 1, 2 and 8 pins.  I throw mine…and leave the 2 pin.  If Alice gets her spare, we are dead, D-E-D dead, I tell you.  She throws her ball and….it…leaves the pins untouched!  OMG, the humanity!  Got lucky there, trulily, Team Papaya pulls off a win in a match that could have gone either way, we were so evenly matched.  Thank you for such an exciting night, Team Santol!

So as the ball rolls and the oil foils best laid plans, the guys reigned supreme in both Giyera de Patani tonight.  Rosie, Jun and Olee of Team Rambutan all had awesome nights and made short work of Team Durian, making Jun the victor of the Battle of the Young Ones/Once.  Giovie had a great night: the Philly Pins will giant on Wednesday (maghihiganti…thanks, Raul Q!).  Paul played well too: go my Bowlinator teammate!  At the far end, I witnessed a victory dance/hug amongst the Team Suha teammates (Roy, Eden and Edwin) who had frontally assaulted (harap-harapang sinugod) Team Pakwan (Edmer, Chelo and Ivan), in a sweep that made Roy ruler of the Compendio Game of Throwns.  The collective scores of both teams seemed much lower than in previous weeks, but Eden had a breakthrough performance that made Team Suha’s sweep possible: yebah, so proud of you, my dear!  Just to keep score, momentum is with the guys in the 2014 MFL Giyera de Patani: 3-2 guys in the lead against gals.

My poor godsister Brenda appeared to have used up all her mojo at her Wednesday night USBC league, where she played her first 400 game and scored a whopping 170 for Team Bowlzilla with Joel C, Romy and Desi, but could not get her groove with Team Duhat (nang kita’y napilayan), which was soundly beaten by Team Lansones.  Team Chico’s Grace, Dennis and Blue combined their super powers to beat Team Mangga’s Jon, Mitchie and Lowen.  Team Bayabas suffered loss in the hands of Team Langka, with Rolly ascendent and Rico transcendent.  I witnessed Rico stringing strikes, and commented that he was building the Great Wall of China, not just a picket fence!  He humbly responded that I should have seen what my Go Papa did.

And what exactly did my Go Papa do?  I missed it, did not see any of it, but apparently it was a sight to see, what my Go Papa did: strings upon strings of strikes, nerves of steel, Superstar All Star performance, and a level of play that we should have all just stopped to watch and witness.  He went in with an unbelievabowl 212 average and had scores of 194, 258 and 257 (which could have been higher), for an unprecedented 709 series and 236 average for the night.  Apparently, Romy, Marlon and String of Team Guyabano were able to grab Game 1 in their match against my Go Papa’s Team Atis with Lino and Lolet, but then Joel exploded in the next two games and that was the rest of the story.  As Marlon said, Lino and Lolet were so relaxed as Joel took them all to school.  Romy said that Joel should be “Employee of the Month” as being Player of the Week is no longer enough.  I guess my question is, how high can he go?  How much higher CAN he go?  Wait and see, wait and see!  Go Papa!

The MFL Week 6 League Standing Sheet has been posted on the Limerick Bowl website.  Here is the summary of Week 6 team standings. Team Guyabano retains the top spot but Team Chico is gaining ground in the second place spot.  Team Papaya managed to land the #3 spot but is tied with Team Pakwan on number of wins. Team Atis is #5 and Team Langka  has risen to #6.

REMINDERS on our THEME NIGHTS:

·        It is PHILLY TEAM Night this Sunday, October 19, Week 7.  You can wear your (black daw, sabi ni Roy)  Eagles gear, or your Phillies or Flyers shirt.  Kung wala, don’t limit yourself to pro teams, as you can wear your Great Valley, Downingtown East, Villa Maria, Villanova, Pin Killers, BowlDawgs, or whatever Philly team shirt you have.

·        There is no theme for October 26, MFL Week 8.  You can continue to wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, or wear Filipino shirts in honor of Filipino- American Month.

·        Please be reminded to go get your bowl-ready Halloween outfits for our Bowloween Night on MFL Week 9, November 2.  Your bargain basement costume for this year and for next year’s MFL may be found in the costume stores after October 31st, or get creative and make your own!  Magbabalik ba si Luigi?  Anong magiging kulay ng buhok ni Ivan?  Abangan!

ADDITIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS and REMINDERS:

·        Team Captains, please kindly hand over your team’s pay envelopes to me by the end of the FIRST game.  I have not gotten any summary of payments from Limerick Bowl in the past weeks because I have had to hand in the envelopes after league.  Your help is greatly appreciated!

·        Folks, let’s try to take a 5-10 minute break at the end of the first game.  This is a good time to make sure you have paid your bowling fees for the night, buy your Lucky Strike 50/50 raffle tickets, pay for the delicious empanadas you ordered from Alice Deo (and order more for the next week), take a bio break, get dinner at the snack bar, get more beer, make chica with your amigas at the other end of the building, and consult with your favorite Bowl Whisperer or bowling angel.  I know we get too caught up in the competition we miss the chance to interact with folks in the other lanes, even the ones on your lanes!  I am guilty of this, but enough already.  We only have 5 more weeks in the league: let’s make it last even 5-10 minutes longer.

·        Please be reminded that it is absolutely imperative that all bowling fees are paid by Week 9, November 2, which happens to be our Bowloween Night.  This will allow Limerick Bowl to have our prize monies available to us on our Finals Night on MFL Week 11, November 16.

Please kindly note that a line-up change is in the works for Team Mangga with the unforeseen withdrawal from the league of Lowen Gono due to shoulder injury.  Get well soon, my dear practice buddy and former Balut teammate!  It appears that we will be adding a new league member this coming Sunday (mystery, simulan ang chimis kung sino kaya ito…).  Team Captains will receive additional communications via email, as your concurrence to the proposed line-up change will be required in accordance with our league rules.

Only 5 more weeks are left in our league schedule.  Too fast, too fast, time is flying too fast!  We hope you are enjoying the league.  Nawa’y ikinagagalak ninyo ang ating munting liga.  Kaligayahan naming paligayahin kayo (naks!).

See you at the lanes, my dear MFLers!  Bowl, baby, bowl!
