10/5 MFL Week 5 Duriang Kay Bangis!

It was WEAR PINK day on this brisk October day in the Philly Pinoy Mixed Fall League (MFL), and our leaguers were decked in all shades of lovely pink, in honor of Breast Cancer month.  Of course, we had a few outliers....  James had blue on, coz “my ball is pink”. Gabriel had peach, “it is kind of pink.” String (a.k.a. Chona) wore gray, nasa loob daw yung pink.  July’s ball is a light red, equivalent daw to pink.  Viva la diversity, we'll take ALL shades and permutations of pink!

Our marquee matchup of the week was Team Papaya versus the matinik, matindi at mabangis Team Durian, with team captain July Boca, my Philly Pin teammate Giovie Young and my Bowlinator teammate Paul Ficarra, who unfortunately was under the weather (get well soon!).  All three players are new to the MFL this year, although July is a veteran bowler and Paul has been playing in our Winter League.  Giovie is a new bowler but is as addicted as I am, and is improving by leaps and bounds every week.  This photo of Team Durian, matinik, matindi at mabangis (ang amoy), was taken by May Liboon.

After having a comeback kind of week with the Philly Pins at our Wednesday night USBC league, and having a good practice session at the Palace on Sunday morning, I was feeling good about playing well.  I had strikes at practice, and so did Gabriel and while it took a while for James to get one at practice, he continued to strike during the game and all night long, super galing galing!  Truly our pasimuno secret anchor, James played consistently well for all three games: way to go!

And Gabriel was amazing: he scored 144 in the first game!  I was pitiful and could only muster a 138….  At one point in that first game, Gabriel made a bad shot and I said “Don’t worry, you are still playing better than me” to which he said, with no hesitation, “I know!”  So proud of this kid!

AS you can tell from the title of the blog, it was not a Go Papa-Yah kind of night: Team Durian was truly matinik, matindi at mabangis!  Sinapak kami ng Pakwan, at dinurog naman ng Durian.  O mababangis na prutas!

It was a stellar night for July, who shined and courageously took away our chances for more than one win.  What a strike master!  We tried but collectively could not keep up.  Amazing, amazing, what a sight to see!

It was a banner night for Giovie, getting more amazing spares than I have seen her do, like hitting a 4,5-spare in the third game by grazing the LEFT side of the 4-pin, wow!  Looking good, my Philly Pin teammate!

Alas, my good feeling starting off did not last, and instead, it was a super long and ultra painful night of splits and ugly leaves and weird missed spares.  So sorry, my teammates, I could not help out and even dragged you down.  So encouraging and so kind were July and Giovie, for cheering every good shot I made (there was not a lot of them), to which I would sing/say “Thank you, thank you, ang babait ninyo, thank you!” (too kind, too kind, I am undeserving).  I am pusong sawi (brokenhearted), so tired of bad nights at the lanes, which is supposed to be a place of joy for me!  I said I would be driven to sing pusong sawi songs again in the blog, so here is my lament, in the tune of Basil Valdez’s Paano ba ang Mangarap:

Paano bang mag blog and BowlStar na sawi

Go Team Papaya! Go!

I commiserate with those among us that struggled this past Sunday, and other Sundays: bad nights are hard to shake off, but shake them off we must!

The MFL Week 5 League Standing Sheet has been posted on the Limerick Bowl website.  Here is the summary of Week 5 team standings.

Team # TEAM RANK CURRENT   Wk 5

14 Suha 12 6.5 13.5   1 3
12 Rambutan 13 6 14   1 3
8 Lansones 14 4 16   0 4

It truly was an exciting night at the lanes!  Team Duhat suffered a sweep in the hands of the rampaging Team Guyabano, which has increased its lead even more as the top team in the league.  Team Pakwan swept Team Chico to leapfrog into second place.  My Philly Pin teammate Angie bowled up a storm for Team Langka, which only allowed Team Rambutan one win.  Team Bayabas meted a loss to Team Mangga, while Team Atis prevailed over Team Suha.

And in the most exciting match of the night, Team Santol swept Team Lansones in an epic Giyera de Patani: Alice Deo of Santol against Joel Deo of Lansones, where Alice logged the first female 200 game in the league with a whopping 225 score in Game 1 (natalo ang 219 ni Joel).  But it was the consistent stellar play by our very own Commish Jay Lizardo, which included a nail biting 10th frame finish, which allowed Team Santol to triumph in most dramatic fashion!  That takes the cake as “most exciting clutch play by an anchor!”  These are the matches of the MFL: who needs ESPN on nights like this?

Here is the rundown of fabowlous performances from the 2014 MFL Week 5.

LUCKY STRIKE RAFFLE (50/50): Our Raffle Queen, Alice M, was back!  We extend to you our heartfelt gratitude for taking care of the raffle ticket sales week after week.  Our winner was Edwin of Team Suha, with a $40 prize.  Congratulations!  Our pot of additional prize money from the raffles is now $205: our limpak limpak na salapi continues to grow!  Keep buying those tickets, folks!

There is no theme this coming week, but you MUST prepare for Philly Team week on October 19 and Howloween/Bowloween on November 2.

·        For Philly Teams, you can wear your Eagles or Phillies gear, and if not available, your Great Valley, Downingtown East, Villa Maria, Villanova, Penn State, etc.  I even got the comment on wearing a California team shirt, with rationale: kahit saan, may taga-Philly doon.  Look what you started, Olee!

·        Get your bowl-ready Halloween outfits for November 2.  We timed it for after Halloween so you can get your gear on sale.  Pinoy talaga

The lanes are calling coz I absolutely must play better. We play Team Santol next week: they are coming hot off a sweep this week and we are eager to win, exciting!

See you at the lanes: bowl, baby, bowl!
