Tis the night before Week 2 and the Week 1 blog is super late! Better late than never, and tis good coz our
league standings have been posted on the Limerick Bowl website. I will be brief: more bowling to come in less
than 24 hours!!!
It was Week 1 of the 2015 MFL (Mixed Fall League) and our Philly Pinoy Bahay
Kubo league came decked in red, white and blue in keeping with our Americana
theme. It was a busy start of the season with folks getting back in the groove,
getting their bearings and finding their assigned lanes, and getting their Philly
Pinoy registration fees settled upon arrival at Limerick Bowl. After a quick pow-wow where the teams and
team captains were announced and the rules were briefly discussed, the players
made their way to their lanes and we were ready to bowl!
We realized with only the players’ initials on display on the screen
how many folks have the same initials. Who
is who? Which brings us to our season’s First
QUIZ Question! Please try not to peek at
the answers right below…
QUIZ QUESTION #1:
Name the MFL players that share the initials J. C. (there are three!),
R. C. (there are two), E. S. (also two), G. Q. (two, that
are seeing stars with J. Q.!) and finally there is R. L. (two team
captains!). For bonus points, name their teams.
ANSWERS to QUIZ QUESTION #1:
·
J. C. = Jon Cainglet (Sitaw), Joel Capucao
(Singkamas), Jing Capucao (Kalabasa)
·
R. C. = Rosie Cainglet (Labanos), Roy Compendio
(Sitaw)
·
E. S. = Edwin Sanchez (Patola), Edmer Sotomango
(Upo)
·
G. Q. = Grace Que (Mustasa), Gabriel Que
(Kalabasa)…seeing stars with James Que (Bawang)
·
R. L. = Romy Liboon (Patani), Rico Lontoc
(Talong)
It was great (a relief!) to discover that once play started, the full
name of the player who was up next to bowl was displayed on the screen
(whew!). New season, new teams, new teammates: this is one good way to keep us mentally sharp, to keep us working to remember who is in which teams each MFL season!
As play progressed, it was difficult to ascertain
who was getting the upper hand from match to match, with averages still being
established. It was obvious that some of
us were still quite rusty, or were still getting used to the lanes (it is NOT the Palace...!), while some
played like the bowlmeisters they truly are, picking up from where they left
off last season.
On lanes 21 and 22, Team Singkamas (jicama, turnip) only had Mila with
my GoPapa Joel (Michael had homework) squaring off against Team Talong
(eggplant) which had our carpool buddy Marlon teamed up with Eden and
Rico. It was a close one but Eggplant
beats Turnip as Team Talong leaps ahead with three wins.
Competition was mighty fierce on lanes 23 and 24, which had a red hot
Team Sitaw (string bean) with Jon C, Alice and Roy showing their mettle against
rampaging Romy, Chona and Rolly (nice series!) in Team Patani (lima bean). Wow, even with all 200+ games, Romy and the
Lima Beans could not stop the super String Beans from roping in three points. Sitaw bats out Patani…(yeah, sing that out,
baby! ngik ngik ngik).
Two E. S. team captains (Edwin and Edmer) and Teams Patola (loofah) and Upo (gourd) were
on lanes 25 and 26. Some folks seemed
rusty, their balls still dusty, but fun was had by all! Edmer Mitchie and Jun of Team Upo took three wins from Edwin, Lanie and Dennis of Team Patola.
My Kalabasa (squash) team ended up splitting points with our opponents
in Team Labanos (radish) on lanes 27 and 28.
I am quite glad it was a tie coz what a fun night my teammates Desi and
Gabe, the Wonder Kid, had with July, Rosie and Ed from the ravishing Radish
team. July was getting to know his new
ball (which we all smelled), Rosie was receiving excellent tutelage from Maestro July (she is an excellent student!), Ed was smiling
through each frame, Desi and I were very confused (we’re not at the Palace
anymore!) and the Wonder Kid strung strikes when he felt like it, yeah!
Next to us on lanes 29 and 30 were Teams Mustasa (mustard) and Sibuyas
(onion). Grace and Blue of the Mustard Team were minus Paul (absent): it was a reunion of last year's champion Team Chico! Lino and Lolet were also reunited in the Onion team but with a different Joel... Both teams seemed to have
flashes of brilliance followed by really bad breaks, to which the comment was
made by L. P. of the Onion team, “nakakahawa
ba ang malas?” (is bad luck contagious?)
OMG I hope not! Mustasa garners 2.5 points against SIbuyas.
The other tie of the night was on lanes 31 and 32 with Teams Kamatis (tomato)
and Bawang (garlic). The anchors of both
teams put on quite a show, with Paolo of the Tomato Team fighting courageously
against our unstoppable top male player, "seeing stars J. Q." James who had quite
a series! Their play inspired awesome
games from their teammates, Giovie and Raul of Kamatis and Chelo and Jojo of Bawang, as well: idol!
And finally on lanes 33 and 24 was Team Luya (ginger) up against the
ghost/blind Team Linga (sesame). The
Ginger team with Nonoy, Gigi and Francis swept the ghost team, garnering four points and the top spot in the
league after Week 1. Well played!

One week down, twelve more to go!
Time to shake off the cobwebs and get down to serious business: each pin
counts, each game counts, your teammates are counting on you.
We have no theme for attire in the next two weeks, come in your comfy
and colorful bowling gear. Blind your
opponents with fluorescent colors, distract them by dressing like your favorite
vegetable (oops, save that pala for
our Bowloween….).
REMEMBER to come by 5:15 PM this Sunday as practice will start automatically by 5:20 PM.
Thank you to those that have informed us that they plan to prebowl = we wish you stellar games! Please let us know if you are planning to prebowl or may be late or absent or need a substitute. JC Squared is just a text message, phone call or email away.
Week 2 is upon us: bowl, baby, bowl!
