Fantastic MFL Performances on Pope in Philly Weekend

Just posted the blog for MFL 2015 Week 2 (SEP 20) on SEP 29: thank you for reading the blog and for your patience with my delayed posting.  I will try my darnedest to stay on top of the blogging: I am energized and committed to succeed with this endeavor!

QUICK REMINDER before I go into Week 3 details: Week 4 theme this coming OCT 4 is WEAR PINK for Breast Cancer Awareness.  Let us show our solidarity by making the bowling lanes a sea of all lovely shades of pink, as we have in previous years!

So as promised, here is the MFL 2015 Week 3 blog, a few days after the Week 2 blog, and right before the Week 4 blog.  Life is good and all is right with the world.  The blog title reads like a newspaper article.  Extra! Extra! Read all about it!  So like a news reporter, I shall state the facts and pepper my reporting with relevant statistics, just to bring out my inner journalist and celebrate my unabashed nerdiness (can flow charts be far behind? huwag nawa…).

Pope Mania hit the Philadelphia weekend on SEP 26 and SEP 27, 2015. The MFL 2015 Week 3 on SEP 27 had originally been scheduled as a bye week for the league until a decision was made over the Labor Day weekend to make this MFL season 13 weeks long, with each team scheduled to play all opposing teams. With the Pope coming to town, JC Squared, organizers of the MFL, were aware that massive prebowls could and would occur so that the MFL players could participate in the historic event.  JC Squared was among the countless Philly pholks caught up in Pope Mania, and were among the MFL participants that prebowled for MFL Week 3.  The preceding months, weeks and days in the Capucao household had been spent scrambling to prepare house and home for guests driving up from North Carolina to see the Pope, one reason why blogging in the past few weeks was difficult at best for your BowlStar blogger.  But what a rewarding experience this weekend truly was!  We were blessed with the presence of dear old friends, blessed by the presence of Pope Francis, blessed by the entire Pope in Philly experience, and the MFL appears quite blessed with some super amazing performances as well this historic weekend.

WARNING: Here come the statistics!

Of the 39 MFL participants, only 17 played live on Week 3, SEP 27 (44% attendance).  Of the 22 absent players, 21 prebowled (54% of the league) and we had one player with blind score (absent with no prebowl scores).

This blog would be quite short if I decided to talk about those players that did not do well this weekend.  But hey, that is not how we roll….  We were blessed with great performances indeed, with 13 of the 39 participants turning into prowpeyshownahl amateurs, meaning that the league was 33% PRO on Week 3.  We also had 18 participants that were stellar as Shining Stars (MFL was 46% shiny), such that a whopping 31 participants out of 39 were truly fantabowlous on Week 3.  This means that I will be heralding 79% of you in this one blog due to your spectacular games!  How cool is that?  Bravo, MFL, for a truly amazing Week 3 showing!

JC Squared had prebowled but we came at around 6:30 PM to see how everyone was doing, to practice and to collect the score sheets for the week.  Donna Roberts at the front desk remarked that our league is amazing, as the payment envelopes were provided IMMEDIATELY after she requested them: so proud of you guys!

Here is a rundown of the match-ups and outcomes for MFL Week 3:

On lanes 21-22, my Kalabasa team (with my prebowl scores and Desi and Gabe present) was up against team Upo which had Edmer’s prebowl scores and Jun and Mitchie present.  Hmm, only the anchors prebowled…  Desi had another Kala-Booyah type of night (yebah! 206 on Game 2! 200 clubber, baby!) and Gabe came alive on Game 2 with a 158 score (go Wonder Kid!), but with Edmer’s 206 prebowl score on Game 3 and heroic efforts from Mitchie and Jun, Kalabasa squashes three points while Upo sits solid with one point from Game 3.

On lanes 23-24 were my favorite lines from the Bahay Kubo song: Labanos – Mustasa!  Oh, and it was a bloody battle of the pros! Mustasa’s Grace and Labanos’ July both had terrific prebowl scores.  From Mustasa, Blue was on fire and Paul continued his solid play with scores in the 160-170s (go my champion Bowlinator teammates in the Winter League! Smells like a repeat in the making…).    From Labanos, Ed completely outdid himself while Rosie had progressively higher scores with each game.  So close, so close! But Labanos seems destined to get robbed of a point each week: the Most Valuable Patola (MVP) Lanie staged a split for Patola where Labanos could have won last week, and this week 7 more pins could have given Labanos the split (that was the difference in total pins), but they instead come away with one point.  Oh the humanity!  Mustasa takes three from Labanos: tres cha-chas for the muchacha y muchachos of Muschacha: hacheche, hachacha,  cha cha cha! Andale andale! Yo ablo um poquito poquimon y poqui mo, ayayay!

On lanes 25-26, only Michael played live for team Singkamas (Joel C and Mila prebowled) while Chelo and James played live for team Bawang with Jojo’s prebowl scores.  Michael was on fire!  Jojo, Chelo and Mila were rock solid!  It was a great team turnout for the Turnip team, with Mila and Michael exploding in Game 1, Michael fantastic in Game 2 and Joel C churning out the week’s high score of 238 on the third game = sweep!  Poor James of Bawang was seeing stars of the knock-out kind…oh, to be disappointed with a 500 series after a string of 600s, but don’t count him out coz the season is still young!

On lanes 27-28, Rico was bowling all by his lonesome.  His Talong teammates Marlon and Eden had prebowled, while the opposing team with Rolly-Patani (sorry, can’t stop myself), Chona-Patani (ooh, I like that too!) and Romy-Patani (wow, winner rin!) had all prebowled.  As he later stated, it was really difficult bowling alone!  So difficult, he had a bad slump in the second game (forgot how to bowl!).  With strong performances from the prebowl crowd, Patani and Talong split points, two apiece.

Present versus Absent was the theme on lanes 29-30, where Team Sitaw had perfect attendance (gold star!) with Alice, Jon and Roy playing live against Team Luya’s prebowl scores from Atit, Gigi and Nonoy.  Team Sitaw put in marvelous performances, mind you, they were not slacking at all, but those prebowl scores from Luya, my oh my!  Not sure what team Luya ate to bowl so great during their prebowl, whatever it was, give us some of that! Gigi with a 152!  Nonoy with a 500 series!  Man oh man, Atit was ridonkulous!  With an average for Week 3 that was a whopping 34 pins above his previous average, ATIT of Luya is this week’s PLAYER OF THE WEEK as the Luyang Nagpaluha (translation is literally “ginger that induced crying”).  Diyos na mahabagin… (merciful God).  You guys were truly blessed this past week.  Sitaw steals Game 1 but concedes three points to the Luya-lites.

Lanes 31-32 remained virgin (unplayed on) as Team Patola had prebowl scores from Dennis, Lanie and Edwin against blind/ghost team Linga.  It was a sweep with Dennis and Lanie playing close to their averages and Edwin playing at a remarkable 32 pins above his previous average!  My golly!

And finally on lanes 33-34, it was Giovie playing live for team Kamatis (with prebowl scores from Raul and Paolo) and Joel D playing live for team Sibuyas (with prebowl scores from Lino and blind scores for Lolet).  In a nutshell, the Tomatoes made the Onions cry, as team Kamatis sweeps team Sibuyas.

Here comes the parade of stars, an accounting of the super fabowlous and amazingly pintastic performances from our MFL participants this week, and there are many noteworthy performances, as the statistics showed.  Take a deep breath and maybe a short bathroom break as this will take a while to read…so much to celebrate!

FYI, I deleted the 200 clubber list for brevity, but wanted to mention once more (special mention, of course) that my Kalabasa teammate Desi the Desimator logged a 206 game: way to go!

PROS.
These folks logged three games that averaged at least 15 pins over their previous averages:

·        Player of the Week Atit of Luya: Week 3 avg was 160 (126 previous). Scores = 141, 147, 194.  Luyang Nagpaluha, bow!

·        Chona of Patani: Week 3 avg was 120 (101 previous). Scores = 120, 152, 89.  Great job!

·        Ed of Labanos: Week 3 avg was 134 (119 previous). Scores = 130, 112, 161 (!).  Way to go!

·        Nonoy of Luya: Week 3 avg was 180 (157 previous). Scores = 170, 207 (!), 163.  That’s the Nonoy we know!

·        Grace of Mustasa: Week 3 avg was 140 (127 previous). Scores = 141, 149, 131.  Amazing, Grace!

Our TEAM OF THE WEEK truly outdid themselves, and amazed us all, not only making the onions cry and pulling off a commanding sweep, but each team member scored 15 pins or more above their average.  The Tomatoes have turned pro!  Congratulations to Team KAMATIS, our TEAM OF THE WEEK!

·        Anchor Paolo scored 205, 223 and 201.  Previous average was 192, Week 3 average was 209, a 629 series. Super wow!

·        My former Philly Pins teammate Giovie had ultra consistent scores of 133, 138 and 137 against her previous 121 average.  Ata girl!

·        Super Seminole Raul logged scores of 164, 167 and 147 against his previous 141 average.  Go Noles!

Most Valuable Patola (the Lanie Santos Show)

Your blogger is getting quite tardy: shame, shame, shame…  We already played Week 3 this September 27 and here comes the blog for….WEEK 2!  I say better late than never, but I have to break this trend.  How else can we keep track of all the great performances and unforgettable moments of each exciting week of play?  How else are we going to remember who is in which team?  And how else can I continue pestering you about what is happening from week to week?  So, predictably, poetry ensues (is karaoke far behind?):

It seems that being late
Is constantly my fate
Try hard as I may
Life just gets in the way

Just in the nick of time
Week 1 blog went online
Week 2 (overdue!) just got done
Week 3 , I have just begun

Since I’m not really that crazy
About doing two blogs in a few days (eeeh)
I should strive to stay on the ball
And blog quickly about all y’all

Week 1 seems AGES ago!  On September 20, MFL 2015 Week 2, we finally had all our players establish averages, with Michael Nicolas of Singkamas and Paul Ficcara of Mustasa present, and playing quite well too!  Of course, since their averages and handicaps were not set, there was a flurry of confusing calculations going on after their respective matches (yebah, Romy!).  Hmmm, I prefer not doing ANY calculations in public (too much pressure!).  I actually prefer not doing any calculations AT ALL, since the Limerick Bowl computers do the trick, BUT JC Squared did perform a few ad hoc calculations that were later validated by the Limerick Bowl League Standing Sheets, which means that we may actually KNOW what we are doing!  Good to know, right?

Shout out to our official MFL auditor of scores and guardian of the League Standing Sheets, Romy Liboon of Patani.  Of the three copies of the score sheets we record/write our scores on every week, Limerick Bowl gets the white copy, while Romy and I split the rest (I usually take the pink sheet and Romy takes the yellow sheet).  I use the sheets to write the blog, while Romy checks the scores and standings on the Limerick website.  Romy diligently watches the website for updates, so he was the first to note that the Week 1 scores were posted, and lo and behold, Nonoy Rocero of Luya was logged as a  female player (Nonoy became Nena! Correction needed ASAP!).  Romy also noted that the early version of Week 2 results had major issues: no scores were recorded, so it looked like we all LOST!  These errors were brought to Limerick’s attention and were quickly corrected.  Thank you to Limerick Bowl for their timely response!  Thank you to Romy for checking the scores on the website!

Here is a rundown of the match-ups and outcomes for MFL Week 2:

On lanes 33-34, the score sheets were quite misleading and the calculations confusing, as it was the first week for Paul to play for Team Mustasa, with Grace and Blue.  But in the end, the outcome was that Paul’s stellar play could not prevent a sweep by Team Bawang, with the inimitable “seeing stars JQ” James, who was bolstered by a BowlStar turned pro, Chelo and the consistent play of Jojo S.

On lanes 31- 32, Team Luya (with Nonoy, Gigi and Atit) takes one point in the first game while Team Upo, with Jun, Edmer and wife Angie (subbing for Mitchie who was injured), takes the rest of the games and total pins for the win.

On lanes 29-30, Team Patani with Romy, Chona and Rolly, started slow but eventually got into their groove to take three from ghost team Linga.

On lanes 27-28, GoPapa Joel’s Team Singkamas, with promising prodigies of the Ball Whisperer Mila and Michael, did well and swept Team Sitaw with Roy, Alice and Jon.

On lanes 25-26, Team Talong, with a noteworthy team performance from Rico, Eden, and Marlon, leaps and sweeps over Team Kamatis, with Giovie, Raul and Paolo.  Rico had his own cheering squad: cheers of “pogi points” effectively brought about strikes and spare conversions!

On lanes 23-24, my dear Team Kalabasa (Desi, Gabe and me) was squashed and brought to (onion) tears by Team Sibuyas (Lino, Lolet and Joel D).  We took game 1, but were killed by Lolet’s prebowl prowess, Lino’s third game ascendance and Joel’s showers of strikes.  Ayayay! Shout out to Desi whose scores increased exponentially throughout the night!  Kala-Booyah in the face of team SeeBooYahs!

And last but not least, on lanes 21 and 22 was the nail biter of the night, two teams so evenly matched, with players so focused on winning, it was a thrill to observe Team Labanos (July, Rosie and Ed) vs. Team Patola (Dennis, Lanie and Edwin).  Could have gone either way but it was a tie, points split between the teams.  With stellar play from July of Labanos and strong performances from Rosie and Ed, Patola’s Dennis and Edwin fought to keep it close but it was the MVP, Most Valuable Patola, Lanie, who brought home the split and prevented the loss.  Well-done, well-played, well-deserved!  Bravo on such a gutsy and unbowlieavable performance, Lanie! Here is my ode to our MVP:

Demure she may seem
She bowls like a dream
Works hard on her game
Such a classy dame
Female bowler ascendant
Her play is consistent
It is not surprising
Her average is rising
She cannot be stopped
She does not give up
She deserves to be
This week’s MVP!

With our averages already established, I shall again be heralding the super fabowlous and pintastic performances from our MFL participants each week.

200 CLUBBERS.
We have six (6)!  James of Bawang (207, 225), Joel C of Singkamas (216), Paolo of Kamatis (212), Rico of Talong (211, 206), Romy of Patani (208) and Joel D of Sibuyas (206).  Congratulations and keep those 200 games coming!

PROS.
Wow, these folks decided to turn pro last week, logging three games that averaged at least 15 pins over their previous averages:

·         Most Valuable Patola Lanie Santos: Scored 170, 165 and 157 against previous average of 139.  That’s a Week 2 series of 472 and 164 average, which is a whopping 31 pins above previous average!  Wow, wow and super WOW!

·         Not far behind is my GoPapa Joel C of Singkamas. Previous average was 164, Week 2 average was 191 (27 pins above average) with scores of 179, 216 and 179.  Makalaglag salum-pepe ni Jing…haaay!

·         My amazing Kalabasa teammate Desi the Desimator blinded the competition (and entertained us with his dancing!) with a 23-pins over previous average performance, logging in games of 131, 169 and 180 for a 160 Week 2 average with a 137 average coming in.  Sayaw, Desi!

·         The IncrediBowl BowlStar Chelo Babe of Bawang amazed with a Week 2 average of 132 with a 114 average coming in (18 pins above average).  Her scores were 114, 136 and 148:  yeah!

·         July of Labanos had scores of 168, 166 and 138 against a previous average of 139.  His Week 2 average was 157 = 18 pins over.  Over na over, over!

·         Chona of Patani bowled games of 130, 109 and 88 against a 93 average: that’s what I’m talking about!

·         Mila of Singkamas had scores on 131, 118 and 85 against a previous average of 111.  GoPapa Joel likes this upward trend!

We have an entire team that turned pro, which means they are our TEAM OF THE WEEK!  Congratulations to Team TALONG! Pogi points, baby!

·         Anchor Rico Suave-Mambo scored 211, 163 and 206.  Previous average was 175, Week 2 average was 193. Mega pogi points!

·         Muse Eden had inspired and inspiring prebowl scores of 131, 160 and 117 against her previous 120 average.  Whoo hoo!

·         Super happy carpool buddy Marlon logged scores of 125, 133 and 179 against his previous 129 average.  Yebah-ebah-ebah!

SHINING STARS.
These 14 players logged at least one game that was way above their average:  JoelD-Sibuyas (206), Roy-Sitaw (193), Edmer-Upo (190), Jing-Kalabasa (189), Paul-Mustasa (176), Lino-Sibuyas (175), Angie-Upo SUB (172), Lolet-Sibuyas (164), Jun-Upo (159), Rolly-Patani (155), Edwin-Patola (155), Ed-Labanos (151), Francis-Luya (149), and last but not least, Gigi-Luya (148).

Hmm, Jing-Kalabasa has a nice ring to it, but Rolly-Patani takes the cake….  Maskipops, just to help remember who is in what team, right?

As of MFL Week 2, here are our top male and female players.  I should mention that the ability of my MFL 2014 Papaya teammate James of Bawang to maintain a 200+ average and 600+ series for two straight weeks is AH-MAY-ZING!!!  I asked him why he could not play like this for our team last year.  The answer: Coz I was his teammate…ngiih!
