PRESENTING the Bahay Kubo Teams of the 2015 MFL!

We had a great turnout at tonight’s 2015 Mixed Fall League (MFL) DRAFT DAY at Limerick Bowl.  We had more than 30 people present, of which there were 27 who played for $2 a game, 21 of which were confirmed participants in the MFL 2015 draft.

THE DRAFT
After majority had completed playing one game, we demonstrated how the twelve (12) teams of the 2015 MFL were formed (or “drafted”).  We had 12 females and 24 males, which was the perfect recipe for creating 12 teams with two male and one female in each team.  The top 12 males were first arranged in order of descending averages (from highest to lowest).  The 12 females were then matched with the 12 top males but in the opposite order (ascending averages, from lowest to highest).  The resulting matchups of the top males and all females are shown in TABLE 1.

The averages of the resulting male-female matchups in Figure 1 were then added up (see AVG SUM column in TABLE 1).  The averages of the matchups were then ranked from lowest to highest.  Ties were broken by giving the higher priority/ranking to the matchup with lower male average.  This ranking, called DRAFT# in TABLE 1, determined which matchup would have the priority to take (draft!) the next available, highest ranking male participant as the last member of their team.

The resulting teams, including the team averages, are presented in TABLE 2.

Participants from each team then drew lots for their team number and name, which were based on the vegetables in the folk song Bahay Kubo (JC Squared drew the lots for teams with no representative), and the draft was completed.  Here are the lyrics to BAHAY KUBO (which JC Squared needed to look up – it’s been a while and we couldn’t remember!).

Bahay kubo, kahit munti
Ang halaman doon, ay sari sari
Singkamas at talong, sigarilyas at mani
Sitaw, bataw, patani.

Kundol, patola, upo't kalabasa
At saka mayroon pang labanos, mustasa,
Sibuyas, kamatis, bawang at luya
Sa paligid-ligid ay puno ng linga.

We had selected 14 vegetables from the song (had enough players for 12 teams but just in case…), so had two team names and numbers left over after the OFFICIAL 2015 MFL DRAFT was completed.  But lo and behold, we found ourselves faced with two additional male players wanting to join the league!  With a few calls (thank you, Rolly!), we were able to find a female player and so the 13th team was formed.

THE TEAMS

We are proud to present to you, the BAHAY KUBO TEAMS of the 2015 MFL! For those of you not present at the draft, you should have heard the “my vegetable is bigger than yours” (“mas malaki yata ang ___ kesa sa ___”) remarks that were already being made between UPO and TALONG when the team names were drawn.  Hmm, you can already tell that it’s gonna be an interesting MFL season!  By the way, the contact information for the MFL participants are also provided in TABLE3, so you can already confer with your teammates, select your Team Captain, maybe even start practicing together, connecting on Facebook and over coffee (naks!).

Return of the Mixed Fall League: MFL 2015

I haven't been blogging
The BowlStar's been bowling
Too busy to post, that's a fact
In tournaments, I've done well
Lots of cool stories to tell
Been blessed both with luck and wth pluck
The Bowlinators are on top
The Philly Pins just can't be stopped
My teams have been on the attack
But it's that time of year
Mixed Fall League is here
So the BowlStar Blog has to come back!

WHOA!!!  My last blog was before the finals of the Philly Pinoy Winter League: how can that be?  For a quick update, yes, the Bowlinators won in the Winter League, and, yes, my Philly Pins have been consistent league champions in the USBC Downingtown Women's Wednesday Night League since summer 2014, yebah!

But let's talk about the Mixed Fall League, MFL 2015.  We are back!  Hubby Joel and I, together known as JC Squared, are happy to be back managing this league for the third year in a row.  Our theme this year is BAHAY KUBO ("nipa hut", Filipino folk song) vegetables (I know you are singing it in your head now....).

We are still planning to make the teams based on bowler averages, as in previous years, with a new twist: we are having a DRAFT DAY and Open Bowl on August 23 at 5:00 pm at Limerick Bowl, so our new folks can set their averages and JC Squared can form and announce the MFL 2015 teams LIVE at the conclusion of the night.  Exciting!  Hey, that's THIS SUNDAY!  Only $2 per game!Come one, come all!  YEAH!

And that's only the beginning! There's more in store when the league season kicks off on September 13.  Okey, here is a run down of highlights of this year's MFL:
  • We have a 12-week season from September 13 to December 6 (bye week on September 27 = hey, we have to see the Pope!)
  • There is a one-time Philly Pinoy event registration fee of $10 for participants.
  • Bowling fees have increased to $16 per player per night.
  • No position rounds this year, we are using the full USBC schedules for all 12 weeks
  • We are allowing substitutes for the league, no registration fee, but not guaranteed to play and not eligible for prizes.
  • We are allowing up to 4 prebowls, since it is a 12 week season.
But most things will remain the same. We will play on Sunday nights starting at 5:20 PM. We will have the 50/50 raffles.  We will have a Wear Pink day, an Americana day, a Wear Filipino day and the Bowloween Halloween extravaganza.  There will be a blog each week (I hope).  And of course, all proceeds will be given back as cash prizes.  Limpak limpak na salapi (loads of money)!

The MFL League Rules are posted below.
Any questions, please just let us know.
(Sorry, gotta rhyme...)

Get ready for another fabulous MFL season, my friends, it's gonna be a good one coz third time's a charm!

PHILLY PINOY MIXED FALL LEAGUE (MFL) 2015 – LEAGUE RULES
Limerick Bowl, 653 West Ridge Pike, Limerick PA 19468
League Managers: Joel and Jing Capucao (JC Squared)

1.       The Mixed Fall League (MFL) will bowl every Sunday from 5:20 PM onwards at Limerick Bowl for a 12-week season, with 12 weeks of regulation play starting on 13-SEP-2015 (Kickoff Night) and ending on 06-DEC-2015 (bye week on 27-SEP-2015).  Awards Ceremony will be held on 06-DEC-2015.

2.       Interested parties must sign up by providing their contact information (email and cell phone) to the League Managers.  A $10 Philly Pinoy event registration fee is required for participation, due by the League Kickoff Night, 13-SEP-2015.

3.       League Teams:

a.       The League Managers are responsible for creating teams of 3-4 players based on bowler averages and number of players.  The intent is to systematically create teams with comparable team handicaps, and to encourage greater social interaction among the league participants.

                                                   i.      Teams will be mixed, containing at least one female bowler.

ii.      Each bowler’s most recent Philly Pinoy MFL, Winter League, or other official league average will be used to form the teams.  Players with no applicable average must play three official games on or before the MFL Draft Day to set their average and be eligible to join the league.  Arrangements can be made directly with the League Managers and Limerick Bowl to set averages before Draft Day.

iii.      Interested players with set averages can choose to play as league substitutes (subs).  There will be no team subs, only league subs.

b.      Each team must appoint a Team Captain, who will determine the team lineup and collect the bowling fees due each league night.

c.       The 2015 MFL teams, team number and team names (based on BAHAY KUBO vegetables) will be determined, assigned and announced after all player averages are set on MFL Draft Day, 23-AUG-2015 at Limerick Bowl.  Bowling on MFL Draft Day will be $2 per game and will start at 5:30 PM.

4.       MFL Kickoff Night on 13-SEP-2015 will start promptly at 5:00 PM, to allow for teams to decide their Team Captains and for the final league rules to be discussed with the League Managers.  All league players MUST be present (or otherwise represented) at the Kickoff.

5.       Practice and match play for all weeks in regulation play will begin promptly at 5:20 PM.  Lanes will be freshly oiled per USBC specifications, but the league is not USBC-sanctioned.

6.       Team Captains will collect the bowling fee of $16 from their team mates and submit their team’s payment envelope to the Limerick Bowl front desk BEFORE the start of bowling each week.  NO PAY, NO PLAY.

a.       Subs will be responsible for the $16 league fee on the night they play.  Registration fee of $10 does not apply to subs (waived).

b.      Bowling fee for pre-bowls and absentee bowlers must be promptly paid by the following week of regulation play, or the bowler cannot bowl (absentee score will be used).

7.       All proceeds will be allotted as cash prizes for participants.  Planned cash prizes will be announced to league members by the third week of league play.  Substitutes are not eligible for cash prizes.

8.       Handicap and Scoring

a.       The 2015 MFL League averages will be established on Kickoff Night.  Previous averages are only required/used to form the teams.

b.      Individual handicap will be 90% based on score of 220.  For example, average of 150 will have handicap of (220-150)*0.9 = 63.

c.       Four-point system will be used, with one point for each game won and one point for total pins per series/night.  A tie will give each team 0.5 points.

d.      Team rankings at the end of the league will be based on total points won.  USBC League schedules will apply for all 12 weeks of the league season (no position round weeks).  Total handicapped pins will be considered in case of a tie.

e.      Limerick Bowl will manage scoring, team rankings and handicaps on behalf of the league.  Scores, team standings and handicaps will be available on the Limerick Bowl website (http://www.limerickbowl.com/), with paper copies provided to team captains each week.  Any corrections or disputes on scoring must be brought promptly to the attention of the League Managers for resolution.

9.       Special situations

a.       A legal lineup will consist of one player.  Bowling MUST begin when legal lineups (one player, including prebowl or substitute) from each team are present.  No postponements for late players.

b.      Absentee score (blind score) will be the player’s average minus ten pins.  Team Captains and League Managers must be notified if a player will be absent or may be arriving late.

c.       Late comers may bowl on a given night ONLY IF no player from their team and the opposing team has bowled the tenth frame of the first game by the time they arrive.  Once the first game begins, the late comer’s absentee score (average minus ten pins) will apply for the first game, and the late comer can only play on the second and third games.  Players arriving after the second game starts cannot play that night; their blind score applies for the night.

d.      A maximum of four (4) prebowls per player will be allowed until the 11th night of league play (prebowls are advance make-up sessions for planned absences on a league night).  Prebowls are not allowed for Week 12 (Finals Night).  Prebowl time slots at Limerick Bowl are available for scheduling on Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, or Sunday to Thursday from 9:00 pm to closing.

e.      A list of available subs will be provided to the league.  Team Captains are responsible for contacting subs to play for their team.  Only one substitute can play per team on a given night.  Subs are not eligible to play on Week 12 (Finals Night).

f.        USBC rules will apply in situations not covered above.  Special situations will be subject to arbitration by the League Managers, in consultation with the Team Captains.

10.   Lucky Ticket Raffles will be held based on availability of non-bowling volunteers, proceeds of which will be added to the cash prizes for participants.

a.       The raffle tickets will sell for $1 for 1 ticket, $2 for 3 tickets and $5 for 10 tickets

b.      One lucky ticket will be drawn each night, with 50% of proceeds from each night awarded to the holder of the winning ticket, the remaining 50% going to the pot for prize money.  Example, if $40 worth of tickets is sold on a given night, the winning ticket holder gets $20, and the remaining $20 goes to the pot for league prize money.

c.       Earnings that go to the pot from these raffles will be distributed on finals/awarding night IN ADDITION TO the planned prizes.  The awards structure is TBD.

11.   Limerick Bowl Specials

a.       MFL participants can practice at Limerick Bowl for the special price of $2/game.  Sunday morning games are $1.50 even for non-participants.

b.      During league play, MFL kids can play one (1) bowling game, rent bowling shoes and enjoy a $5 arcade card for the special price of $6.

See you at the lanes!  Bowl, baby, bowl!!!
